Thinking about how Shelby’s only frame of reference for family life was fiction, which doesn’t necessarily translate into reality.
Of course she fell into her found family fantasy. She was desperately lonely, having no friends, a missing father, and a mother who rejected her. Had her faux family been born within the town, she would’ve stuck with them no matter what. It just so happened that the people who accepted her the most bluntly and the quickest were the vampires.
Sure, she befriended Drift and Avid. But Scott’s the one who said “I like you.” Scott’s the one who “wanted” to be her roommate. Scott’s the one who fits into the father archetype with the most ease; he’s the head of the family, he loves his daughter, when Shelby and Pyro lie to him he’s “disappointed” (as if he’s “not mad, just disappointed”.)
He was everything she wanted, whether she knew it or not. The adoptive father who loves his child. The very thing she lost. It was all molded to fill a void that had been taking space inside her for far too long. Affection is addicting when you’re starved for it.
Shelby didn’t see that Scott wasn’t kind, he just liked her.
When the pairing is so good that it doesn’t matter if you see it as romantic or platonic. What matters is that you see them and know that one is not complete without the other. Frequently bought together. Do not separate. If you separate them one of them will bite you

like. I’m autistic. I often tag my thoughts and knowledge with “I think” even if I’m quite confident in them—because there is a chance, however small, of me being incorrect
Avid not only knew vampires were real, he also knew quite a bit about them—his only real sticking point was “Was Elle actually a vampire?” And not wanting to reveal the Everything of his backstory, because fucking obviously he didn’t
so, everything he said got “I think”ed, because what if? What if what if what if??
