#hereâs a hot take. rejecting monogamy and teasing subtext between characters who will literally never be confirmed gay/bi is not the apex of#LGBT representation just bc itâs happening on the Island of War Crimes and Medical Monopolies.
Freedom of sexual expression and the normalization of non-traditional relationship models are important, but they are not the be-all and end-all of LGBT liberation movements, and they are certainly not the only, or even the most important, goals for our visibility and representation in media. Theyâre just not.
Now I hate to brake it to you, but outside of the vague implication of polyamory, X-Men is not doing any more for gay representation than literally any other superhero comic. A few new characters have been confirmed bi, Raven and Irene can finally be called each othersâ wives (uh-oh! assimilation scare!), and writers have been give more freedom to include gender and orientation diversity in the new generation of young characters. Great! The same exact thing is happening in mainstream DC comics. Itâs happening in all sorts of less-popular Marvel stuff, too, okayâ X-Men is not any more radical in itâs gay visibility than Strange Academy, it just has a more attentive gay readership.
You could convince me that Krakoa, as a fantasy setting, is a radically open-minded paradise for LGBT people, which is really cool, but that narrative will always ring hollow if the burgeoning LGBT mutant community (and audience) are unwilling to engage with the systems of harm and that are being used to build said paradise. Itâs perfectly fine that Krakoa is a flawed and problematic nationâ thatâs the whole pointâ but you cannot pretend that the political messaging of Krakoan X-Men is more advanced or morally superior than any other comic because it just literally is not. The bottom line of the Krakoan era remains thusâ liberation can only be attained by engaging with and achieving dominance in the same structures of power which once oppressed you. Thatâs not nearly as radical as some of you want to believe it is.
