#my mother in law recently sent us a package with clothing she no longer wears but thinks we could be interested in #and folks a great Mystery of the Universe has been revealed to me:#if you want to survive the heatwave please get your clothes from a friendly menopausal woman who generally runs hot her entire life #these are the most airy breathable feels-like-nothing-on-skin clothes i ever tried on #i love my mother-in-law she is the kindest girl ever and she and her husband treat me as if i actually am a part of the family #anyway:#it's the funniest thing with the clothing because my wife *hated* being dressed girly as a kid and she has very particular taste in clothin #so when her mom sent her clothes before she was always like 'for goodness sake why frills again this is such a good fabric but #hell will freeze first before i wear this'#but NOW. now there is ME and give me ALL of the frills and other high femme shit #m-in-law has finally found her living doll to dress ahaha #also... she dresses way more modern than me lol #she wears a strapless dress that barely reaches her knees meanwhile i'm in a floor length skirt and a top with a stand-up collar looking #like a catholic priest on vacation #(however that is one of my preferred aesthetics)#she makes my wardrobe Contemporary #and so LIGHT #i wouldn't even know where to buy thin fabrics of this quality #well for what i know it's mostly secondhand shops in a small town so the best there are

I was wondering if you could explain “fandom is marketing”? I think I get what you mean but then also maybe I don’t?

If something has a big fandom, publishers and studios know they can make money off it. This is why we see publishers openly acquiring and selling things that were originally posted as fanfic, like Alchemised, Heated Rivalry, etc. It’s why the horrid wizard woman considers people participating in her fandom to be supporting her political causes.

Word of mouth is the most effective way to sell people on media, and fandom is word of mouth that costs the creators/owners nothing. Doing Fandom Stuff used to be subversive, but media companies have now figured out that fandom is a form of advertising and they’re no longer worried about it. Those of us who still think of fandom like it’s a livejournal-era secret club we can never let the corporations discover have got to update our self-concept
