balloon boy's a hot air balloon pilot with a mischievous streak, often pulling off pranks and being an inconvenience to fredbear and his friends. he only has a soft spot for his sister, JJ—who is apparently named 'Jolly Jay' in the sketches, but i do not recall that ever being mentioned in the actual show.
while he's never a major antagonist, he's often uncooperative towards fredbear & whatever child he is helping that episode, and he'll only help them travel somewhere if he was bribed with batteries*. honestly, i feel like the writers put him in an episode when they want to stretch out the runtime because he is often an unnecessary obstacle. but he does have 90% of the funniest lines in the entire series so i can't complain too much??
he was a major character in a pretty good episode; BB's Air Adventure. there, JJ got lost in a scary forest, and BB reluctantly had fredbear and springbonnie help him find her. it's honestly heartwarming though maybe that's because i have siblings so literally any sibling story gets to me LOL
he didn't appear much after that, though, only being relegated to a few cameos. eventually, when the show rebooted to 'freddy & friends', he and JJ just didn't appear. i honestly don't know why, i don't think there was anything wrong with the characters. i guess after the 1983 incident, they didn't want to use any characters from the show that fredbear's in regardless of their relation to the character? if that's the case, i don't know why they decided to bring the two back for the 1987 location.
side note: do you guys know what's up with dee dee? i got my hands on a page of incidental characters and i haven't seen that fishergirl anywhere. MB never mentioned designing a third sibling in any of the interviews, so i don't know what's happening lol. i don't think everyone who preserved the show collectively agreed to edit a JJ recolor into the episodes, but everyone who has grown up with the show have said that they do not remember that character appearing in the episodes. idk, it's kinda weird. please email me if you got any info!!
* i seriously do not know if they ever explained this, and i've already watched through the entire show twice. i do remember that, in the christmas special, balloon boy has a collection of toy cars that didn't come with batteries, which is why he made it his life's mission to get a lot of batteries(?) however, the show doesn't acknowledge the christmas special, so i'm not sure if it's even canon. i think it's just a dumb running gag that the animators decided to stay with.
