Frank contemplates calling in sick on 12 November. He's had a good run. He re-established his rapport with Dr. Al-Hashimi. They had a long sit-down talk about how his diversion came to be and how it wasn't caught. He was very honest, she was too, and they ended up on a foundation that allowed them to work together effectively, and he ended up being quite fond of her. He revived his relationships with the nurses, he regained the trust of residents around his seniority level, and he's more grateful than he can express for people like Samira who just welcomed him back like he never left. And Mel... oh, he has Mel. He has a best friend the likes of which he hasn't known ... possibly ever.
Things are good, is the point. And now Robby is coming back and they clashed so badly the last few times they spoke and he just... he's looking at the calendar and he doesn't have it in him to come in.
But he's not a quitter, and he knows that Abbot is in for the night of veteran's day, so he signs up for that shift, because they'll need all the seniors they can get. And then Samira calls out actually sick the evening before (he's seen her, she looked queasy), so he agrees, with a very heavy heart, to do a double shift and work the day of Robby's return.
Mel comes in before Robby does, and she brings him an ice cold red bull and a piping hot latte. He wants to kiss her, but he doesn't, that's not where they're at, not yet.
"Can you stick with me today?" He asks her instead. And maybe it's the tiredness from a long nightshift that makes him be blatant, and maybe it's the nerves that started piping up a few weeks ago (when Robby's return date was fixed) that lower his inhibitions, but Mel just smiles at him and says "Of course."
And so the day's not as bad as it could have been.
