Day 18-Parade | Exact WC 347 | ao3 | @kingdonmicrofic
Memorial Day was always a very special holiday for Mel and Becca. Every year growing up was spent at their community church’s cemetery, sticking American flags and fake flowers in their father’s plot. And his father’s plot. And his father’s father’s plot. Generations of King men serving.
Their mom was never the same after their dad died while serving. You wouldn’t think their father was the only one they lost that day. It was as if their mom was just as gone as he was.
This year, instead of spending the day together at Kennywood, eating junk and getting dizzy on rides, Mel sat in a folding chair on the side of the street. Frank sat on the curb in front of her, his arms stretched over her thighs, and Tanner and Penny were on either side of her, buckets ready to collect as much candy as physically possible.
Although Frank would inevitably pull the “donating some to kids who don’t have candy” trick on them later that night, when they realized that a majority of the artificially colored balls of sugar had somehow disappeared.
“Mellie,” Tanner whined, his hand resting over where her bump poked out between her tank-top and her shorts, “when is Aunt Becca gonna go by? She promised us she’d throw us extra candy.”
Mel’s head tipped back, her hand settling over his as her belly shook lightly with each laugh that escaped. “Very soon, bud,” she said, ruffling his hair before leaning down to place a kiss to the crown of his head.
After a few more minutes, Penny let out an excited squeal, standing up out of her chair and almost running out into the street, before Frank’s arm reached out to hold her back.
Mel looked over, and coming around the corner, was Middle Hill’s float, Becca and Adam stationed directly at the front, throwing candy out every few feet. She looked so happy. Mel couldn’t stop the tears that welled in her eyes.
Sure enough, when she saw Tanner and Penny, she practically threw her whole bucket at them.

do you have any modern baseball recommendations? Songs you feel like Frank loves by them?
I unfortunately am not the best person to ask this, as Modern Baseball was recommended to me as a band that Frank would love by my lovely friend @tvgremlin, and I had listened to their music before but not frequently. Anyways, in my listening research, pretty much every single song seems like something Frank would listen to and relate to!
Day 17-Crowd | Exact WC 317 | ao3 | @kingdonmicrofic
For Frank’s birthday, his parents got him a ticket to see Modern Baseball at The Pavillion for their revival tour. When he opened his card and was met with the ticket, he couldn’t stop the embarrassingly boyish sounds that escaped him.
Modern Baseball had been one of his favorite bands since he was twenty, listening to them play over the local independent radio station in between his courses. Listening to them on his old iPhone four, with the shattered back that left glass shards in his finger tips.
He listened to them on the little iPod shuffle that his mom brought to him during his first stay in rehab, full of all of the songs that lived rent free in his brain before benzos took their place. Before he had kids, then left them for rehab.
Not just once.
Twice.
The second time around, it wasn’t his mom who brought him the salvation of music.
It was Mel.
She showed up at the rehab facility, giddy to see him despite everything. No matter what, it seemed he could do no wrong in her eyes. At the end of visiting hours, she reached in her bag and handed him a small, pink, mp3 player. One of the ones you’d get from the clearance section of one of those closeout stores.
And it was full of all the music they’d bonded over since he came back from his first stint. Modern Baseball filled most of the storage.
He couldn’t complain.
So there he was, standing just at the edge of the venue, the performance just beginning, when his eyes got caught on a familiar blonde braid, swaying just at the edge of the crowd.
“Mel?” he asked, walking up beside her.
She turned so fast her hair whipped him in the shoulder.
“Frank? No way!” She gasped, completely overjoyed. “This just got so much better!”
No air. Just absolutely stifling. Felt like breathing stew. Sweat pouring out of every pore. He could feel the veins throbbing in his head, his head swimming. Several people called out to him. Nothing made any sense. Sounded like people were called from the end of a tunnel.
What was wrong with him?
Frank tried to breath. But his chest was refusing to move.
Panic attack?
What the hell.
It was busy yeah, but Frank couldn’t figure out what had triggered it. No major traumas, no triggers he could identify. He stood outside in the bay. The air no cool than it was inside. Baffling. He snapped the air tie he’d found earlier several times. He still had the dizzying sensation of being trapped down a well. Sounds blurred into a roar in his ears. Robby could be screaming in face for all he knew.
‘Doctor Langdon?’ The sound was familiar. And nearby. Like right next to him. His chest was still trapped in a vice. ‘Okay. Can you move? Do you want to move.’ Soothing. The voice was very soothing. No burden of guilt. Gentle, cool pressure.
He was aware of being guided. Away from everyone.
‘Do you know the 3-3-3 grounding technique?’Did he nod? Felt like his puppeteer was yanking on his strings.
‘Can you try for me?’
Frank struggled to breath. ‘Three things I hear: Cars. Sirens. ... The wind.’ He rolled his neck, his shoulder and pressed his hands against the wall behind him. ‘See.’ Oh he needed to open his eyes. The world was startling bright. ‘Blue of the sky. Ambulances...’ He turned his head. Mel standing there. Looking worried but not scared. ‘And my friend.’
At least he hoped so. The panic had mostly ebbed. But his lack of impulse control had him spiralling.
‘You want to be my friend?’ Frank was baffled. Who wouldn’t want to be Mel King’s friend?

@kingdonmicrofic Day 16: Glitter (429) WARNINGS: stripper au, smut
This is a stereotype. Well, okay, maybe it’s the subversion of a stereotype? Mel isn’t sure that makes it any better.
She’s still falling in love with a stripper at a Bach party. It’s just that the stripper is male and she’s female.
Yeah, she doesn’t feel any better about this.
“You’re drooling,” Becca points out, unhelpfully. She has on massive noise cancelling headphones so that the music doesn’t bug her too much, but Mel still isn’t sure how this is the thing she chose for her bachelorette party. A strip club! Mel needs another drink. “I don’t get the hair thing.”
Miserably, Mel shrugs. “I think it’s evolutionary. Like part of my brain knows that he would survive a cold winter. Shoot, okay, I’m going to go get a drink, do you want another?”
Becca nods, already distracted by another one of the strippers. A few minutes of mildly frustrating attempts to order at the crowded bar later, Mel returns with two cosmos. Only, Becca isn’t alone at their table. “Hi, Mel! This is Ken!”
The stripper is tall. Probably six feet, with floppy boyband hair and piercing blue eyes. When Mel fails to say anything in English (she makes a noise that gets mostly drowned out by the music) Ken takes the drinks from her hand, places them on the table, then leads her to her chair. “Cat got your tongue? Don’t worry, we don’t have to talk about anything.”
It’s the first time Mel has ever received a lap dance in her life, and she can’t say she expected to enjoy something like that. Yet, she’s left panting and clenching her thighs when Ken is done. He grins at her, his hand running over her braid before he backs away. “Nice to meet you ladies. Feel free to ask for me any time.”
~*~
Mel, her sister had called her. She’d been too shy to say anything when he was dancing on her, but she sure seems to have found her words now. “You—fuck— you don’t use your real name, do you? You aren’t actually Ken?”
He groans, squeezing her tits as she bounces up and down on his cock. Some of his body glitter has transferred over to her, making her shine under the dim lamplight of his bedroom. “No—goddamn, sweetheart— no, my name’s Frank. Not sexy.”
She proves him wrong immediately, moaning his name as she picks up the pace, looking down at him with her jaw dropped open.
God, he’s glad he broke his rule about not going home with customers.
@kingdonmicrofic day 16: glitter 350/227. cw: internalized homophobia
Frank’s heart felt like it was attempting to pound out of his chest as he faced Mel with her three small pots of colored glitter.
His girlfriend looked at him patiently, her own tri-colored shimmer on her face in pink, purple and blue on each cheek, carefully painted on her by Becca before she’d left the house.
She looked beautiful.
He, on the other hand, still couldn’t compute what was happening to him. How his body reacted to Mel’s offer, how he’d said yes before he could even think about it and all he wanted to do was say no and run home, away from colorful crowds and songs that he wasn’t ready to sing along to yet.
Shame was strange, but he wasn’t sure he felt ashamed. He could feel shame for betraying people’s trust, for stealing medication from patients when he was at his worst. But he wasn’t ashamed about being attracted to other men, but something was triggered within him at the idea of other people just… knowing.
Knowing and being able to judge him for it, describe his whole character and reduce him to something. See him as other when he’s done everything everyone else had done to fit in, the wife, white picket fence and two-and-a-half kids. Frank was a part of it all, he’d almost lost it before, and he’d clawed his way back into being seen as a person for that to happen again.
“Baby, it’s okay.” Mel’s voice brings him back into the moment, to the crowd of people walking and chanting around them. The flag they share, the colors adorning her face as she looks back at him with a love he struggles to convince himself he deserves. “Just walk with me.” Mel says, holding out her hand and putting the glitter away
Frank takes her smaller hand in his own shaking one, ashamed he couldn’t do it, relieved that he didn’t. He reaches forward and kisses her in thanks, knowing that maybe a few specks will brush off on him, and that’s all he can ask of himself this year.
Day 16-Glitter | Exact WC 227 | ao3 | @kingdonmicrofic
The morning of July 4th, Mel decided to take Becca’s advice and add a little “razzle-dazzle” to her usual look. She walked into her room and rummaged around for the container of patriotic hair glitter.
She pulled her hair back into two french-braids. She dipped her fingers into the goop, and begrudgingly smeared a small amount across the top of her head. Not too much. Just enough to add a little sparkle.
That 4th of July shift would be the worst Mel ever experienced.
The case that got her most was a family of four that had gotten into a boating accident. The mother and father succumbed to their injuries, leaving their daughters behind. Her last case of the night.
Frank found her doubled over in the ambulance bay, her hands wound tight as her chest heaved.
The second he stood in front of her she crashed into him, her head buried in his chest as he squeezed her tight, swaying her back and forth.
He stayed with her long after his shift had ended. Long after he should’ve been home.
The next morning Abby would confront him about the glitter she’d found stuck to his scrubs. Asking him if the reason he came home so late was to blow money at the strip club.
For some reason, that seemed like an easier explanation than the truth.

Mel mentions her husband a few times in passing to some new med students, and they paint a picture of the man in their heads. Another weird mousey academic. Maybe he’s a historian something. They picture someone who could fit into the cast of the big bang theory, a gawky strange odd ball guy who would match King like a bookend.
She mentions eventually her husband being a doctor as well, there’s something in her tone like she thought they would know that which is… odd? How would they?
Dr King has step kids. Which takes them by surprise. Her husband seems to be a dweeb, and he’s been married before? Huh.
Eventually they see her ring. It’s in a silver chain on her neck. It’s surprisingly pretty. It’s got a fairy like unique setting to it. “My husband got me some rubber ones to try when we first got engaged but I hated the feeling. This is just the best option for me.”
Well that’s sweet of him.
For all she talks about my husband made this last night and oh my husband read that and sorry I was just thinking about this joke my husband made comments, she actually seldom discusses the man in question.
Not beyond doctor, married before, tall.
She gives them little to work with.
So it’s quite the shock when one day Dr Langdon takes her hand after a trauma, and softly asks “Hey, you okay Melly?”, bending down to look in her eyes. And she shakes her head, he mutters that he knows, baby, and pulls her into a hug. He rocks her against his chest and mutters in her ear and kisses her head.
And it startles them, because obviously dr King and dr Langdon are friends but they’re both married it’s-
Oh.
It’s not inappropriate at all. They’re married to eachother.
