Where do I begin?

1. If their first contact for hiring you is related to “Women’s History Month,” be wary.

It’s certainly nice that comic book publishers would want to celebrate females by putting out special “all-women” anthologies and material targeted for the all-important “Women’s History” month of March. I mean honestly: that’s really great.

But if a publisher is truly interested in hiring you—YOU, you as a talented writer or artist outside of gender—then they could have approached you for other projects before then.

Not that getting exposure in a comic by a major publisher is anything to sneeze at. But if your goal is getting regular assignments by said publisher and making an actual “living”…again, why didn’t this publisher contact you for something else? Why is your “beginning” with this publisher based on your gender? The publisher puts out anywhere from 30-70 books a month…why only now are you being contacted?

I don’t know very much about Homestuck! I read a big chunk of it months/years ago— it’s fascinating and intricate and way weirder than I would’ve expected something with such a huge fanbase to be, and I LIKE THAT. Doing my own sort of thing with its simple, sprite-ish characters was exciting, and Phil’s script is fun and I think plays to my strengths… Or I forced it to, at any rate.
