In a Universe not far from Marvel’s Earth-616 comic universe (Earth-693), with some influence from the 2000’s Raimi Spider-Man Films and The Spectacular Spider-Man Cartoon, we can meet a familiar but overall fruitier cast of characters. We’ll zoom into one band of these hidden in an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of New York City, where Spider-man’s greatest enemies have gathered to plan and… do some other things. Let’s meet this cast in order of their arrival;
Otto Octavius ✸ Doctor Octopus ✸ 53 ✸ she/her butch
Doctor Olivia ‘Otto’ Octavius graduated from MIT in the early eighties before being whisked away by the Department of Defense to be their lucky golden child. She had a lonely childhood, and she had an aching suspicion she’d be a lonely adult as well, all things considered. Otto often felt like an inverted mockery of womanhood in the lecture halls and labs she inhabited her whole adult life in, she even felt like an outcast during her attempt at making connections in a queer community in her undergraduate years. She felt like she could only be grateful that at least her state approved of her love of the atom. Otto rose to gain a reputation as an egotistical spitfire in the field of Nuclear Physics, her colleagues at best describing her as ‘demanding’ and ‘solitary’. Otto became captivated by the way to safely handle a nuclear reaction on one's own, and from that faint idea eventually came the actuator harness. She was able to convince her military bosses to let her contract OsCorp and her old college friend Norman Osborn to develop and build the harness. From these years of work Otto got her arms and OsCorp gained its transhumanist division. Otto believed she was working on the cutting edge of human advancement, and close to truly touching the secrets of the atom. When the harness was done, Otto thought she was demonstrating her crowning achievement to the world. What she got instead was a reaction gone critical, months in hospitals with radiation burns, the actuator arms fused permanently to her spine, and the birth of Doctor Octopus. Otto’s been doing freelance atomic research and attempting to dodge annoying heroes and unnecessary institutionalizations for nearly a decade since. After connecting with an old test subject from her OsCorp days, and suddenly having three young women join her warehouse over the course of half a year, Doc Ock hatches a plan to form the most fearsome crime syndicate on the coast. What she gets instead turns out to be so much more…
Flint Marko ◈ The Sandman ◈ 32 ◈ he/him butch
Ruby Baker, Sylvester Mann, Flint Marko… one can end up going by a lot of names when an early life of petty shoplifting eventually gives way to working in organized crime. Although Flint worked as hired muscle for some of the worst bosses in the city, he tried his best to keep his hands clean, just doing his best and making enough to send home to his girl and her kid. This is how he eventually ended up at the door of an OsCorp lab at age 22. The last thing Flint remembers having details explained by a younger Doctor Octavious before being strapped down and having his whole world turned to silica dioxide and calcium carbonate. Since then Flint’s life has been a series of occasionally regretful decisions between jail cells, becoming beaches, and sometimes rooming with his friend Alexsei. When Flint and Otto have a chance meeting years later, the former Oscorp scientist offers Flint and Alexsei a room at her hideout.
Alexsei Sytsevitch 𖤕 Rhino 𖤕 29 𖤕 she/her 𖤕 masc femme
Alexsei liked to help people, and Alexsei liked pretty things. But unfortunately sometimes the world has other plans in mind for people. Born to a mixed Jewish-Russian-Orthodox immigrant family in the boroughs of New York, Alexsei always struggled to fit in. Built like a tank at 6’5” before her transformation, her plans to work as muscle to pay for nursing school only panned out for about three semesters before it all fell through. When Alexsei arrived at OsCorp, she was more willing to go through a more extensive procedure. Staying in facility labs for weeks as she went through hormone treatments, extensive skin graphs, subdermal plates installed in a lattice pattern across her body, turning her into the Rhino. After paying off the debts she needed to a nauseating amount of shitty bosses she’s now her own free agent rooming with her friend Flint.
Electro ✮ Maxine / Maxwell / Max ✮ 24 ✮ they/she/he futch
It’s hard to get a straight answer from Electro on exactly how she arrived at the warehouse. It’s very likely they were born a low grade mutant and their electrical powers only came into full fruition during a powerline accident during her short lineman apprenticeship era. But Electro’s body had always been able to hold more voltage than should’ve been normal, they thought they were a robot from a young age because they’d always discharge static passively. It always was tied to their brain and mental wellbeing, and this became abundantly clear and worse after the accident. Otto found this out by retrieving extensive psych ward documentation under Electro’s legal name. It was after one of these visits Electro crashed into the roof of Doc Ock’s warehouse as a bolt of living lighting in a manic fueled episode. It turns out what they really needed was a stable roof over their head, a 20 thousand volt capacitor system laid across their body courtesy of Doc, and a loving found family of girlfriends to have this spark feel stable.
Angie Toomes 𓆂 The Vulture 𓆂 69 𓆂 she/her femme
She always tried her best to keep her nose down. Stay in the closet, be the man her parents and the world expected her to be, go to college, get a masters, land a good engineering job, start a family. But in her heart Angie always wanted to fly and share that gift with others. She was wise enough to know not to pursue her aviation dreams just yet, better to wait for peace time science than to have her ideas abused by war time industry. This kept going till she was labeled as well past her prime and one of her former employers, Norman Osborn, apparently felt contractually obligated to take the work she privately produced while working at OsCorp. Seeing her own work filed in a patent without her name snapped something inside of Angie. She decided she’d rather be a woman and a criminal instead of pretending to be a man and a coward. This is how The Vulture was born like a phoenix out of the ashes. After years of forming herself into the woman and criminal she wants to be, she was invited by the infamous Doctor Octopus to join her budding team.
Quinn Beck 𖡨 Mysterio 𖡨 35 𖡨 they/them
A Terror of the Coasts! Terrified of Middle America! It’s Mysterio! Hailing from Los Angeles, California, Quinn always dreamed of having their ingenuity land them on stage. After a drab five years in Boston for a dual degree in engineering and theater, Quinn was ready to come back west and take Hollywood by storm! That was the plan, but after more years than they care to admit working practical and video effects gigs, the closest Quinn got to the big screen was playing a stunt double for a damsel in distress in a shitty superhero film. Quinn eventually got the idea that their talents would be better suited for a different medium, and traveled back east to debut the Mysterio tour at banks near you! After years of some successes, some public panic spread, and minimal prison sentences thank you very much, Quinn feels they’ve done quite well with themselves. But what star doesn’t want to cohabitate with other producers and artists? When Doctor Octopus herself approached Mysterio with that very offer, there was no way they could refuse.
Norman Osborn 𖤉 Green Goblin 𖤉 58 𖤉 he/him male-passing femme
Born an only child into a family with wealth and privilege most people could only dream of, Norman was granted nearly the whole world from the moment he opened his eyes. When he expressed an early and persistent interest in being a boy, his parents, seemingly progressive but ultimately misguided, granted him every privilege they could. Norman would ultimately come to find his own sense of gender was much more complex than simply being a man, but by the time he figured that out in his late teens he also realized how much his parents gained by having a male heir. His father especially had someone guaranteed to follow in his footsteps and take over his lab conglomerate, OsCorp. Norman really just wanted to study the small and beautiful, the unrestrained strength of colonial organisms, what amazing things can happen by just playing with the scales of life. But pursuing those idealistic studies turned out to be very different from the rigmarole of writing grants, hiring lab techs, selecting a model species, and culling failed trials. Norman’s life quickly became a series of chasing a dream that wasn’t his while wearing a mask of a man in board meetings, writing shareholder reports, and building the veneer of a family life. During his rare free time he spent years in the background developing his dream, a specially bred strain of cyanobacteria, chosen for its biocompatibility with sapiens species. Norman designed this with the intention of improving the natural oxygenation and health of the body, leading to a massive increase in strength, stamina, and the works. After seeing the spectacular success and failures of OsCorp's own transhumanist division Norman saw no reason why he shouldn’t test this on himself in the comfort of his own home. What he got was a permanent cohost to his body who was more interested in committing crimes and getting Norman into disastrous lesbian relationships than forming any meaningful bond. After eight years and three faked deaths courtesy of living with the Green Goblin, Norman has arrived at the warehouse door of his old colleague and friend Olivia/Otto.
