Endless List of Must-See Films - The Arch (Tang Shu Shuen - 1969)

Regarded often as the first notable female filmmaker of Hong Kong cinema, her feature film is considered one of the most impressive debuts in Chinese cinema and has been highly influential. Also notable is the utilization of cinematographer Subatra Mitra, a frequent collaborator of Satyajit Ray and is considered one of the greatest in cinematic history.

Tang chose to map her first feature on a remote and also lost Chinese society, from a piece of legendary history allegedly set in a village of Southwest China in the Ming Dynasty. While Tang deliberately chose to represent female subjectivity within a narrative from a residual culture, which was constantly being marginalized by dominant narratives of colonialism and Westernization, through The Arch she also discovered that the hegemonic processes, the sense of lived dominance and subordination within the ethnocentric Chinese tradition itself in fact serve to render female subjectivity impossible. Tang’s physical experience of border crossing could then be translated into a mise-en-scène that destabilized hegemonic ideas of nationality, sexuality and the family. Her struggles involved an anticolonizing conscience and courage and a postcolonial consciousness, much at odds with the colonizing, patriarchal and capitalizing climate of the time. Seen in the context of Hong Kong cinema, The Arch posed an unprecedented overt critique of the oppressiveness of Chinese tradition toward women.
