I’ve been slowwwwwly working on a serious essay about how Bill Finger’s original Two-Face trilogy both reflects and subverts the culture of 1942, touching upon issues such as ableism and eugenics. Partly, my goal is to dispel the myth that Harvey was ever canonically vain or narcissistic, but my thesis is shaping up to go way deeper than that.
What I find particularly interesting is how some of the most relevant comparisons to Harvey Kent, despite his roots in Phantom and Jekyll, are in stories about women. I’ve been scouring through the archives of public domain comics on ComicBookPlus and I keep coming upon romance comics that deal with scarring in ways that feel far more applicable to Harvey Kent and Gilda than any of the crime/horror comics of the Pre-Code era. Heck, there are even a few Post-Code romance comics with relevant themes!
I’m thinking about posting a few full stories, if no one minds. I think there’s some really interesting potential in discussing Two-Face in terms of the beauty standards that women were (and to a disturbing degree, still are) held up to. There are several stories about scarred and “ugly” men as well, but honestly, it’s the romance comics with scarred women who feel more relevant to the substance of Finger’s original Two-Face. It’s fascinating.
