Recommendations
Check out youtube. Seriously, there should be a masterpost just for youtube resources.
Look at your public library or university library. I have found all my resources at my library.
Also, I know this might sound crazy to others, but for my fellow anxiety people, there is no judge from booksellers/librarians when you check out a bunch of language books. Usually I get people who donāt care or people who are really supportive and interested.
Donāt know where to start for self-studying? Look up syllabi from universities. They will outline each unit, which will help you structure your self-study schedule.
If you are going to use kdrama or kpop for language learning, make sure you are doing more than just listening and watching. I have seen a collection of posts of people who are frustrated because they havenāt absorbed the language just by listening to music. Try to learn lyrics. Break down grammar. Write down quotes.
**I am in no way an authority on learning Korean. I donāt guarantee that all of these links still work/ are 100% accurate. I have just used them when I have encountered problems. My recommendations are also not a complete self-study guide. They are just things I learned from experience.
Hangeul holds 14 consonant characters, 15 vowels, 5 double consonant characters and 6 combined vowels. In total you will need to learn about 40 characters to master Hangeul. Furthermore you will also face 11 consonant clusters, but weāll talk about these later. Weāll begin introducing each character group and the sound you ought to associate with them.
Learn the Korean language
Have you always wanted to learnĀ Korean, but didnāt really know where to start? Learning a new language is always fun but itās not always easy to find good study material. So let us help you out ! The siteĀ Korean Language LearningĀ collected all the useful sites and books, and made it easier on people who are planning on learning Korean. Check it out, and get started !

Iām on a roll today, so I bring you, my personal recommendations for Korean language learning! Most of the stuff/links here are what I used myself, and for me, itās quality over quantity. (Though quantity over quality comes to when you actually have to learn it, in which, repetition is key, etc.)
So, here we go! And yes, all of them are free!
First of all, learn hangeul.Ā
90daykoreanĀ (a hangeul pdf)
busyatom (hangeul-learning yt playlist!)
how to practice your hangeul/kana (on my wordpress blog)
personally, I forgot how I learned or what site I used, but I think reading kpop idolās tweets (or fanart artistsā twitter) helped a lot. So once you get a gist of how to read hangeul, just try your hands (or eyes?) on reading the simple tweets! It doesnāt matter if you canāt understand most of it yet, but learning the alphabet will help you a lot in the long run. ^^
Romanizations donāt always sound the same with the Korean pronunciation when you read it, so hangeul is the answer, alright?Ā
if you have any recommendations, feel free to tell me!
Next, my favourite, grammar. Most of these are downloadable PDF files.
TTMIK lessons (it seems intimidating at first but trust me, you wonāt know unless you try! the lessons are bite-sized and straight to the point and i find them very helpful! also, i have the full pdf until level 8, so if you guys want me to upload it in bulks then do tell me~)
Monash University textbooks (book 1, book 2). //my fave!!! (the actual website is down, so the download links are mine, for now.)
Korean From Zero! (you can also learn hangeul in this pdf)
Iām not a fan of online lessons but you can try koreanclass101!
I used to hoard almost EVERY online pdf for language-learning, but when I think again,Ā āwhen the hell am I going to use these?!ā, so yeah, stick with quality over quantity ;)
Aha, vocabulary!Ā
LearnWithOliver (flashcards, helpful flashcards, neat flashcards that are not in flashcards form. haha.)
Memrise
Anki (I donāt use this but it might be helpful for you!)
Naver DictionaryĀ
Google Translate (though a full sentence translation is usually bullshoot and I donāt recommend it, the pronunciation function and one word translation are very helpful.)
My method: Learn a grammar lesson from any of the pdf files, make my own notes, then use post-its/sticky-notes for new verbs and put it where Iāll see them.Ā
You can also learn from hearing a vocab multiple times in K-pop songs/K-variety shows. You guys know whatĀ āģ¬ėā means, right? ;)
Videos to aid your learning (though I prefer reading than watching, but these are the ones I really recommend!)
BusyAtom (also has hangeul lessons huhu.)
TTMIK (see how much I love them)
GO! Billy Korean
Websites/Blogs you gotta check out, for language exercises and helpful tips!
ohmykorean (omg i love this, though you have to have a firm grasp of hangeul first and bits of vocab here and there.)
90daykorean
Master3Languages
learn-hangul
TTMIK also have free workbooks for the first few levels.Ā
Not to forget, motivational/useful tips posts!
Language hacking tips on fluentin3months
10 effective language learning strategies
10-ways to language learning success
not improving? wrong.Ā
25 ways to stop feeling overworked and overwhelmed (because I think this is important as well)
Also, my personal language-learning methods:Ā
When studying, I read the whole grammar lesson, try to understand it, then write down the notes word by word as I pronounce the vocabularies along the way. I understand better after making notes as I process the lesson in my brain. (well, since Iām a read-write learner hehe.)
I use Memrise for vocab.Ā
I read Korean manhwa raws (manga, but Korean version. you can google these.)
I try to form my own sentences like,Ā āShe has a catā,Ā āI have three brothersā, since I donāt have any language-learning partners (sadlyfe) but if youād like to, letās be friends and practice together!!Ā
Always, always pick up bits and pieces from songs and k-variety shows. (2d1n gives me lyfe!!)Ā
Scheduling language-learning into your life is the way to go! Even if itās as short as 30mins a day or 2hours full of concentration, as long Ā as you do it continuously. There will be days when you think you canāt make it, so itās fine to take a break once in a while!Ā
Last but not least, my personal tips/motivation:Ā
Language-learning doesnāt have to be a chore. Itās something you should enjoy! I remember stumbling over the pronunciation of words likeĀ āķķķ ā andĀ āėā yesterday and I laughed at myself, but it was fun! So take things one step at a time, okay?
āDonāt learn too fast for the sake of finishing the textbook.āĀ
If you think youāre slower than everyone else at reading hangeul or even remembering grammar, donāt worry. Youāre NOT dumb nor slow, youāre a wonderful human being! Even trying to memorize one letter/verb a day shows that youāre working hard on it, and Iām proud of you! Good things come to those who work hard! ā”
Always remember to pick yourself up again. Take your time, and believe in yourself! If you really want it, go and get it! You can do it!!!
Even a session of Memrise course a day goes a longgg way, you know. ;)
Shia LaBeoufās āJUST DO ITā because we all need it.Ā
Iāve been learning Korean on and off for almost three years (wow even i cannot believe) and although itās hard, Iām getting there. Itās never too late or too early to start what you love, you know. Itās your life, so you decide whatever you want to!!!
Also, instead of looking for more resources and motivation, I think you should really start on opening that textbook/pdf/memrise course, you know. ;) Eheheh.Ā
I remember the moment I read a whole tweet of an idol (Red of M.Pire, I doubt you guys even know him aha) and actually understood it. The joy!! brought tears!! to my eyes!!!Ā
If you have anything else to add, then please feel free to do so! You can also drop me a message if thereās anything youād like to know, or if Iām missing something, etc. I can also do a Japanese resources masterpost (lol nadia pls) if someone asks for it. But anyway, hope this post has been helpful, even if it helps just one person!Ā
Stay positive yall, and remember, if you can dream it, you can do it!!! Thank you so much for reading my first masterpost, byeom~!

Learn Korean Masterlist
Iām learning Korean and I bet youāre interested or learning it too. Learning a new language isnāt easy, and it can get quite pricey. So Iāve compiled a list of FREE resources just for you! Good luck on learning Korean!
Websites:
Course type sites:
SNU Click Me
This is my favorite course type website even though Iāve only done two lessons. Iām more of a textbook type person, but I really love this website.
Sogang
Many people like this course or recommend it. Iāve never used it, but there are many good lessons you can use for practicing and learning new words.
KBS Learn Korean
There are two parts. One for beginners and the other for more advanced learners. However, this is more geared towards people traveling to Korea. This is still a great website to use for learning vocabulary.
The course can be viewed in different languages not just English!
Pathway to Korean
They have many units and lessons, I havenāt used it, but I checked it out. Let me know what you think of it!
Berkeley Language: Korean 10
For more advanced/intermediate speakers.
Ā PracticeĀ & Reading Sites:
Tip: After learning Korean it is important to read everything! Even if you donāt understand it is good to practice reading and getting used to talking in Korean. Did that make sense?
Indiana Hangul - Has easy vocabulary for each character in the Hangul alphabet
Great for beginners to practice reading! I love this site!
Fresh Korean - worksheets for practicing reading and writing
English Play - Great website to practice reading and learning new vocabulary since their posts are translated in both English and Korean.
Tip: You will have to turn off adblocker to view the posts
The Korean ThoughtsĀ - Has a few posts for practicing reading/writing.
KLEC: Pictorials - Good for practicing!
Korean ComicsĀ
I love this website. It is so cute and great for beginners. There is even a vocabulary page for the words you might have not known that were mentioned in the comics.
Digital Dialects
If youāre more of a game type of person or just want a fun break from word filled pages, check out this website!
Blog
A blog from another self studying learner who also has many resources linked too!
Naver
Naver is basically the Korean Google. I love it so much, it is way better than google. It is great to practice Korean. I canāt waitĀ ātill Iām fluent in Korean, so I can actually use my Naver account that is SO pretty.
They also have apps!
Naver JrĀ
This site is my bestfriend. They have books, games, everything. I love it.
Free Online Textbooks:
Tip:Ā You donāt have to print out the whole textbook, but for the worksheet pages I recommend printing out just those pages (or any other pages you want), so you can actually fill in the problems and visually see the answers, not just in your head.
Tip: If you go on google books and search and (text)book youāre interested in it will show MANY pages as a preview which you can use those pages for examples/practice!
Korean From Zero
This is my FAVORITE resource! I use this for pretty much all my lessons. This textbook is also like a workbook they have many practice problems! They also have a website with the same lessons that are included in the textbook and audio files for pronunciation.Ā
KLEC Textbooks
They have two textbooks. I like these textbooks because it isnāt so serious and filled with boring text. There are cute comics in each lesson, which is great for practicing reading.
Korean Seoul National University Textbook
This is more of a workbook to me which I love. Iād rather fill out a lot of worksheets than read all day! It is slightly older, but it is still amazing!
Links to textbooks
Apps:
Memrise
This is the app I used to learn Hangul! (It is also a website)
Eggbun
Oh I like this app so much, itās so cute. They give you a few lessons from each chapter, but the rest of the lessons you have to pay from. I recommend this site for beginners who already know Hangul. But check this app out. I love it so much!
Tip: On the front/home page you can see there are flashcards for each lesson. The flashcards include ALL the words that were learned during the lesson. It just wonāt have a detailed explanation like the lesson did. But if youāre cheap like me and really like this app, make sure to check out the home page section.
Webtoons
This is great for reading in an enjoyable way! They also have a full English version, where the webtoons are translated.
Tip: Just look up webtoons on the internet and there will be so many sites to practice reading in a fun way!
Pororo
Pororo Flashcards! Sorry Iām still a child.
6000 Words
I live by this app! The cover is very unappealing, but the app is amazing. (The actually content in the app isnāt as unappealing) I really love this app because you can choose which words you want to learn and how you want to learn!
Korean Princess
I donāt know why I havenāt heard of this app before! It is amazing. This app is mostly for those learning Hangul, but it also has vocabulary words!
They also have a Japanese version for those interested in learning Japanese!!
Captain Korean
This is by the same company as Korean Princess, but it is for those who already know Hangul and I love it so much!
Naver Dictionary
You never know when this will come in handy! It also serves as a translator.
Look upĀ ėķ for childrenās Korean books
Videos:
Sweet and Tasty TV
I love her videos and she is the only Youtuber I watch for Korean videos. (Iām not much of a video learner type of person.)
Learn 50 Vocab words in a day
I really like using this method to study new words.
Tips for learning Korean
This video was REALLY helpful
Tips:
Use a notebook for all your notes and vocabulary, so you can refer back to them later and have it all in one place.
I like to have loose papers to use for practice and I store them in a folder.
LEARN HANGUL FIRST! (It is actually pretty easy to learn)
Try to have a studying schedule. I have a lot of free time so I study every other day.
Make flashcards. Online and/or offline. If you do offline flashcards keep them together in a ring, and then when you for sure know the word you can through that word away.
Well thatās it for today! Feel free to message me about ANYTHING. Have a good day!

Korean Resources Masterpost
Since I am often asked about how to learn Korean, what are the best ways to learn Korean, what apps are great for learning Korean, where should I visit in Korea?⦠I thought it would be smart to compile an extensive list of resources to go about your Korean adventure! \(^o^)/
Learning Korean
So, you want to learn Korean? Thatās amazing! But how do you go about doing it?
As with any language, I feel as though itās extremely important to gain an understanding as to how the language is used. Before delving into multiple books and grammar lessons, itās important to soak up the way a new language sounds and how itās used in everyday context. Even a baby is exposed to their native language for years before they dabble in the basics.
So with this in mind, try watching some Korean TV shows, or listen to Kpop. (If these arenāt already your reason for wanting to learn such a beautiful language!) However, if youāre a Kpop fan, Iād recommend watching a few dramas, just to recognise how words are spoken in normal conversation, and vice versa! So if youāre a Korean drama enthusiast, try listening to Kpop if you havenāt already.
Youād be amazed at how quickly you will instinctively pick up basic words or phrases, before you even understand the alphabet!Ā
I want to emphasise how although this isnāt an essential step, (because I know a lot of you will be itching to get started) I do believe that having a small understanding of the spoken language first, greatly reduces any confusion when diving into grammar, pronunciation and the alphabet.
So, youāve binged watched every Korean Drama, and learnt all the lyrics to your favourite K-pop songs? What do you do now?..
The alphabet!Ā
Sounds easy, and quite honestly it is! You just need practice. The best places to learn the alphabet and how to use it:
Korean From Zero
Seemile.comĀ Hangul PlaylistĀ
How to Study Korean
Learn Korean (Memorisation Game)Ā
Learn Hangul
There are loads of resources out there for learning Hangul! But these are the few that I think are simple, easy to understand and provide a quick result! I highly recommendĀ Seemile.com; theirĀ playlist takes you straight through the basics in a classroom style lesson. Itās very easy and straightforward to understand. Alongside Seemile.com, Korean From Zero is also extremely useful for learning Hangul.
I highly recommend learning the pronunciation correctly, rather than relying on romanisation. Romanisation is not always 100% accurate and can leave the words feeling too artificial when spoken.. When relying on romanisation alone, youāll also find that it can often restrict you when learning new vocabulary, or even visiting South Korea itself! Itās best to first grasp a solid understanding of the alphabet and how to read it before you decide to jump straight into grammar!
Right, now youāve mastered the alphabet. What now?..
Grammar
Iām sure grammar can seem quite intimidating at first, but youād be surprised at how simple it is!
Learning a new language is never a quick, or an easy ordeal. However, taking it step by step in bitesized pieces, is often the best approach, and sometimes the most effective!Ā
I would always recommend learning with free sources before investing money into learning a language, because more often than not, free sources are easily accessible, motivational, and incredibly rewarding. Once you grasp an understanding for how the language feels, and whether itās right for you, I would only then suggest buying sources like books, and audio CDs etc.Ā
However, this is purely up to personal preference, as I know some people may prefer to buy the tools necessary for learning as the motivation to learn it!Ā
And of course, thereās no use learning grammar if you canāt understand words! So itās very important to keep improving and updating your vocabulary as often as possible.Ā
So here is a list of FREE resources that cover grammar and vocabulary:
Resources with an [X] beside them are my personal favourites and highly recommended!

Or even try following your favourite Korean celebrities on Twitter or Instagram. Itās amazing how much you can learn from social media! Especially if you try following news stations such as KBS or MBC, it will give you some fresh Korean on your dash regularly.Ā
With any language, the best way to learn it is to surround yourself with it as much as possible!Ā
Listen to Radio stations, such as KBS Cool Fm, or KBS 1 for talk and news, or even MBC Radio. There are many stations to listen to! Even Podcasts are a great resource, listen to native Korean speakers discuss book reviews, or talk about film. Itās a great way to immerse yourself within the language.
List of resources that are NOT FREE for grammar and vocabulary:

Other resources to improve your Korean:
To further emphasise me previous point, try to surround yourself with the language as much as possible! Itās also an incredibly motivating experience to talk to native speakers (although it might not be within everybodyās comfort zone) but it really has the benefit of throwing you into the deep end; providing you with the confidence to learn, adapt and grow extremely quickly as you put your knowledge to use! Plus, itās very rewarding to meet new people, make new friends and learn things you canāt learn from a website! HelloTalk is the best app for this, from my experience.
