if you take your hunger in your arms it will never let you go. take your hunger in your arms.
CHARMER, or Mila Simons. â introduction / pinboard / threads / skeleton.
âȘ tldr under the cut
Most importantly: Mila was last to join Oculus and was twenty four â so relatively old, considering all. Â
Dwells from the Netherlands, where she grew up in a rather cold home with a local, anti-mutant politician for a father and orthodontist for a mother. Used her powers under the radar for quite a lot in school, to gain favour and serve her own needs. Sister catches on, sister blabs to their mother as little sisters do, and disgust and fear start to rot the mother-daughter relationship. (Even more? Was it ever even good?) Â
Post-high school life includes a failed university career, losing her dad of a stroke (âAt least he never knew of your nature,â her mother says, âThatâs the only comfort.â) and using her powers for swindling, theft and conning. Life is treated as a game, the city of Amsterdam as the board. A sense of directionlessness hits, though, as does the fear of being found out as her schemes grow and grow. Â
Oculus debuts. Mila is restless and scared and decides to fly over, to present herself to Harold Knox. Itâs an interesting conversation, Iâm sure, but somehow she pulls it off â or maybe he just sees someone malleable with useful powers. Who knows. Â
So, last to join. Not raised with the others, but still there soon after the debut. Mila wows in the public eye, revelling in the attention, and works hard to prove herself within the team. Competitive spirit pushes her forward. Sheâs good, on most days, but her motivations are murky: she doesnât want to do this to be good and altruistic and heroic â she just wants to be called those things. Â
It ends too soon for her liking. Mila searches for the spotlight elsewhere, kickstarting a music career that sees the release of two albums (one of which is successful). Has a stint on Celebrity Big Brother (doesnât win). Has a reality show of her own for two seasons, before not signing for a third season (the ratings were shit, anyway). Guest starring on Channel 4 takes her career in a more serious direction, but itâs not it, not the break she wants yet. Maybe this Netflix pilot will be it ... ? Â
And then â Harold dies. A second father figure, succumbed to random organ failure. Mila does not like grief, doesnât think it sits well on her at all. She treats her trip to the airport as a PR moment (because it is) and scrutinises the paparazzi photos as she travels. She dreads, laments, but comes. For love or duty or opportunity or perhaps all. Â
ALSO, consider: Alexis Rose mannerisms with Tahani Al-Jamil selfishness. The #ads on her Instagram. Coming in six years late to Oculus Academy with a starbucks. Mila Simons being a Meme for Five Minutes Straight compilation. Etc.
