Blacktail
Blacktail, by Scott Hawkins Blacktail is a wolf whose life is ripped apart by mankind again and again until he seeks revenge. In the bloody aftermath an ancient at witch sets him on a quest to reset the balance of the world and reawaken the Forest God. I couldn’t resist the concept of Blacktail, though I know Hawkins can be polarizing and I haven’t read his other work. I thought I’d take a peek…
a good thread
No shade to Felicia Day but when I listened to a sample of the Red Sonja: Consumed audiobook I was disappointed that it was such a flat reading. It’s perfectly fine for audiobooks, but not a style I enjoy, and after listening to a Conan collection read by Todd McLaren I had pretty high hopes.
I might give it another shot at a higher speed, though.
Red Sonja: Consumed is an excellent work of sword and sorcery, and unabashedly queer. The epigraphs are to die for!
The Unheld
The Unheld, by Luke Larkin Charlie is a lonely girl living alone with her distant father near woods that have become dark and twisted, full of creatures that are made wrong. When Mr. Elias moves to town with his extensive collection of curiosities asking for information about unusual sightings things come to a head as mysterious Society comes to Plainsend. It’s a queer weird western filled with…

For everyone who ‘used to love reading’ but now hasn’t finished a book in years, you CAN get it back. Genuinely start bringing a book (preferably short and either fiction or a non fiction topic you already really enjoy) everywhere you go and when you have 5-20 mins waiting for the bus or at the doctors office or mechanic or whatever, get out your book and read it! You don’t have to finish it quickly or even read it often but it is so good for your brain and fun to get into the habit of reading more (and replacing being on your phone for those moments). Source: I read 0 books in 2023 and I’ve read 12 in the first 4 months of 2026
Possession Island
Possession Island, by Sarah McCarry When her mother died, Angela Bell was left to grow up on the suffocating Possession Island, the setting of her mother’s wildly popular book about lesbian vampires. When she comes home from college she finds her life remains entangled with the same people from high school—Sally Raleigh, who was called home from school to care for her father and run the bar,…

Hemlock & Silver, by T. Goldie Vance Book One
Goldie Vance Book One, by Hope Larsen, Brittney Williams, Sarah Stern, and Jim Campbell Goldie Vance works as a valet at a Florida resort, but aside from fast cars her biggest obsession is solving mysteries. This volume collects the first eight issues. I love Goldie Vance. It has all the mystery and adventure of Nancy Drew, but Williams works magic with the character designs, the settings and…
Herculine
Herculine, by Grace Byron New York isn’t cutting it for our narrator, so she caves in and returns to rural Indiana where her ex claims to have created a utopian commune for trans women. But Ash and the girls at Herculine have secrets, and our narrator may not have outrun her own demon as after all. I definitely got in over my head with this one: gallows humor, religious trauma, demonology, and…

Uncanny Valley Complete Collection
Uncanny Valley Complete Collection, by Tony Fleecs and Dave Wachter Oliver is different, but he doesn’t realize just how different he is until cartoon birds come after him. Suddenly his mom’s caginess about their family tree makes a lot more sense. The story is sweet, and the backstory about the toon world was interesting (especially the villain origin). Kudos to Wachter for not only pulling…
It’s kind of funny. I started reviewing books again 1) to get ARCs so I can afford my reading habit now that I can’t work, and 2) to create some structure in my life around the doctor appointment and emergency room visits. I’ve done such a good job getting ARCs that I have become further unmoored from time. What do you mean that book just came out! I read lit last year??
