The City Plan defines it as “small towns in our big city, where people can meet many of their daily needs locally.”

The goal is to create “a place where you can get all of the immediate needs and amenities within a 15-minute … distance of your home,” architect Shafraaz Kaba told Green Energy Futures. That could potentially include groceries, recreation, green space, housing, health care, small businesses and more — the district plans expected in early 2022 will define what will be included.

The city says it wants to make it possible — not mandatory, but possible — to get to those places without a car, by walking, biking, or taking transit.

Not mandatory… yet! This is in keeping with stated WEF goals and Agenda 2030.

As Twitter user Paveu reminds us, centralizing communities in this way will make them easier to control, and eventually, contain. The end goal will eventually be to limit movement to that district as much as possible.

Actualy there are great walkable planned cities in the former eastern block. Everything in walkable distance, but also great public transport and road connections. There is some green area around them in many places, thugh generally not un the SU, but in Eastern European areas. he prefab commie blocks could have better design, but not as terrible as percieved from those who have not tried them.

The main idea that there is no strict zoning. The living blocks were aligned with the winds and the sun in mind. There are shops, services like hairdresser, dry cleaner, libraries, schools, and high capacity tranport links in walkable distance. There is enough parking space for approxiamately half of the households. There is one acre of green park required by the building code per 1000 occupants.

Actually modern multi-home housing blocks have less green, worse services and traffic connections, and differently bad building techniques.

So the idea is pretty okay actually for high density housing, it has been tried, and worked reasonably well, even if there could be improved upon.

The latent housing crisis created by the second world war was still not solved by the 1960s, and a cheap, scalable solution was quickly needed. Also the heavy industry needed labour, close by to minimize the transportation costs. It was simple (planned) economics.
