Every January I check in on which emulators are currently #1 🏆
I reviewed Emulation Wiki and updated my "Top Emulators" guide with the latest & greatest emulators.
So are there any updates from 2023? SameBoy is now #1 for GB/GBC. Other than that, there are no changes in the top emulator for every other system.
Note that the graphic I attached is simplified for social media. If you check out my guide, I offer different recommendations for advanced users and people with old/slow machines.
I put (*) for RetroArch since it's a multi-system emulator. Different cores power its video game emulators. And my guide states which core is recommended per system.

One thing I don't think I've ever seen talked about is how post-apocalypse ideation is largely about homelessness.
Homelessness looms large in the American consciousness. Like, not that it's irrelevant elsewhere, but it's got a particular cultural place in the US that's reflected in Hollywood, and therefore relevant because what makes it into film and TV sets the terms of so many conversations.
We don't acknowledge it if we can help it, but I think most people know they're never more than a few very bad months from winding up there.
Even people who are sure it only happens to people who deserve it, who fuck up and put one foot in the morass of their own foolish volition. Even they know the quicksand is there, waiting to be walked into, and that the odds are stacked against ever climbing out on your own once you have. And that they, too, are capable of fucking up. Of trusting the wrong person. Of getting cancer incorrectly.
And those of us who know damn well we can't be sure we're safe even if we do everything right, we know it even better.
And in that sense it doesn't matter what the world would realistically look like after X kind of apocalypse, what people would do, how society would adapt. Because the anxiety that's being processed is about the reality that's in existence now.
About what if my world ends. And I lose access to the fruits of developed society, to clean clothes and new glasses and running water, to a safe place to sleep where I don't expect to be killed or robbed, or driven out by men with guns and dogs. To my home and work and family and everything I usually use to tell me who I am.
What if every man's hand is against me, and every meal is a small victory, and there's only my own dwindling strength between me and the long night?
Will I make it? Will I hold up under the strain? Will I retain my dignity? Will I be lucky? Will I be able to protect the people I love, in that world, the world where no one is protecting us anymore?
Is there a way to continue to live as a human person, when you're denied the prerogatives of one, and don't know if you'll ever get them back?
Putting this anxiety into the context of a massive apocalypse divorces this scenario from the burden of shame tied up in the idea of winding up in that sort of situation in the normal course of events, by having society vanish rather than expel you, personally, as a washout, and continue on around you.
It also allows you to rule out a priori the question of what resources might be offered but can't in an anticipatory context be counted on; shelters and programs and housed friends and family who may or may not help. And narrow the narrative to only the question of what you can survive, and often a fairy tale about surviving all of it and starting over.
Rehearsing for a loss in a mythologized format is a very normal anxiety processing behavior, and I think a lot of apocalypse scenario building is attached to the buried dread of that personal apocalypse. But I haven't seen that one make the list.

FINALLY got to redraw the official art
I swear we will never forget how the slow death of these babies was literally being televised.
The whole world knows now that these babies have had their oxygen cut off from them by israel and the whole world knows that the hospital they are in is being bombarded by israel and the whole world knows that the families of these babies were being held hostages at gunpoint by israel inside the Al Shifa hospital.
The whole world also knows three of these babies have died already as the NICU shuts down.
Those who are silent about Israel's atrocities have made a deliberate choice to go down in history as the most shameless cowards. This is a very avoidable tragedy that you have chosen to maintain with your silence.
i went into costco for the first time ever yesterday. i dont think ive ever been in a store that made me feel more like i was constantly in the way and everyone wanted to kill me
ever since i was a little girl i knew i always wanted to violate intellectual property and copyright law

i do not pity israel. never have, and never will.
each night that gaza experiences is deadlier than the last, as idf soldiers record propaganda tiktoks, make rave parties and grwms and fit checks, gloat over having food and water, and film themselves deriving sadistic pleasure from torturing their hostages and victims and desecrating the dead.
Palestinians have to display their martyred before the camera for you to believe the atrocities that the zionist entity has subjected them to. they cannot even mourn in private. the apartheid entity murders them in cold blood, and you deliver the killing blow by doubting them.
babies whose families have been killed will never get to know their own name.
i can't reshare a tenth of the videos and photos that cross my timeline. i have seen more dead children in the past month than i have known death my entire life.
israeli settlers burn olive trees, bomb bakeries and fishing boats, shower white phosphorus and earthquake bombs on the captive civilians of gaza. you already know about the disastrous effects of white phosphorus, but earthquake bombs were last used during ww2 to wipe out entire cities.
how holy is the land that seeks to be built over the mass graves of thousands of children? is it holier than the miracle of a child being born in this hypocritical world?
all 11 universities in gaza have been bombed. academics should be agitating right now, especially those who call themselves "decolonial thinkers." destruction of universities is a sinisterly deliberate act to sabotage the Palestinians who will survive this great catastrophe.
the act of cleansing your hands before prayer is extremely important to muslims. no part of us can remotely comprehend the grief of the mother who refused to wash her hands from the blood of her children after losing them in a zionist airstrike over gaza. "I swear I won't wash them, I won't wash my hands, how else am I supposed to sleep near my kids."
it is only both moral and right when one side defends itself. the other side are the price of war, no better than insects and cattle and sheep left to die within the four walls of the slaughterhouse.
this situation should not be up for debate, but let me finish with one final thing : do your research about Palestine. HOWEVER. you do not need a degree in middle east studies to object to an ongoing genocide. if someone outwits you in a debate about historical details and every nuance of a subject, you were and will remain entirely correct in objecting to a genocide.
may those martyred rest in peace and be reunited again with their loved ones in heaven's eternal vastness.
DO NOT STOP TALKING ABOUT PALESTINE.
glory to Palestinian resistance. from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.
erwin x f!reader. cw: alcohol. modern au - reader is late 20s/early 30s and he’s late 30s/early 40s. he is a history professor.
“I didn’t expect you to be…”
The way Erwin, the man you were set up on a blind date with, trails off should make you feel self conscious but with everything you have learned about him over the past hour, you simply smile and raise a brow in his direction, sipping from your old fashioned to hide your grin. He watches every move you make, eyes as blue and deep as the ocean sparkling with curiosity, and he finds himself engrossed in everything from the subtle smack of your lips to the elegant way you hold your glass.
“What? So charming? Beautiful? Intelligent?”
One hour in and Professor Erwin Smith smitten by you, something he’d be apprehensive to admit if asked, yet it’s evident on his face and the way he chuckles at your easy jokes.
“I was struggling to pick just one.”
Another grin the lip of your glass can’t hide blooms on your face and you shrug nonchalantly.
“Then why not all of them?”
You are magnetic and he’d be a fool to keep you from feeding him lines and sly smiles from behind the safe barrier of your whiskey and ice filled glass, liquid courage clearly encouraging whatever is happening currently, but frankly - he doesn’t mind. It has been too long since his last date and he needs to send his fellow history department employee Annie a note in thanks for her suggestion of meeting up with you.
It has been more than he anticipated but he isn’t mad about it, watching you finally place your glass on the table in front of you rather than hiding behind it. He’s certain what he’s getting now is you but he’s eager to see more now that you seem more accessible, shifting in his seat slightly.
The older man feels so at ease with you he almost forgets this isn’t a regular occurrence, this is a first date and he must impress even if it means taking the focus from you. He’s almost resistant to the idea of you as anything but the star of this simple dinner shared by two strangers hoping to be more but he clears his throat and smiles, lower lip a little wobbly which belies the touch of anxiety he’s currently feeling.
“Annie told me that you love to read.”
Smiling at the mention of your friend, you shrug humbly and he can’t help but laugh that this is the moment you’ve picked to be coy. Perhaps he’s truly digging beneath the surface, pulling you apart from petal to root, and he leans back in his chair and sips from his own whiskey neat watching you formulate an answer.
Erwin Smith, above all, is a charmer and you’re witnessing it first hand. It’s humbling as the charmer to be the one swept off your feet but he’s handsome enough you let it slide, delicately tracing circles with your index finger around the rim of your glass while contemplating just how much of yourself to give away.
What could it hurt to give at least a little? You don’t sip from your glass this time, peering up through your lashes to be met with the heavily lidded gaze of the man across from you.
Gosh, it’s hard to tell who is charming who anymore.
“I can show you my collection better than I can explain it.”
Erwin chuckles and your face warms. Is it alcohol or pure lust causing all the blood in your body to rush to your face?
“That’s the most creative way I’ve ever been asked to go home with someone, I’ll give you that.”
You gasp, feigning shock and his face falls until you laugh, raising your brow with a half smile.
“I’m only inviting you for a private reading, Professor Smith. Don’t take it too seriously.”
The use of his formal title from your pretty lips is heady and he hums, the sound low in his throat and making your head spin. It’s hard to tell exactly what he makes of you but you believe he likes what he’s figured out so far if how quickly he searches around the room for your waiter is any indication.
“Is that a yes?”
Your brow still raised when his eyes fall upon you and he chuckles, reaching across the table and capturing it in his own. He rubs his thumb over your knuckles and lifts it toward his face, kissing the back of your hand as if he has done it a thousand times. You’ve been rendered speechless and your mouth moves dumbly, searching for words to secure your victory but they simply do not come.
“What kind of man says no to a beautiful woman?”
Your face blazes and your eyes dart from his. It’s safe to say you won’t be winning this round but you hardly mind when you feel his gaze on you, skin prickling with awareness. It isn’t often that you let someone else get the last word but you’ve been given no choice, his thumb still pressed against your palm while gently setting your arm back down on the table in front of you.
“I’m hardly the type to kiss on the first date but I couldn’t help myself.”
Again, you find yourself searching for words and coming up short, grinning and tilting your head. He watches you reach for your glass again. Throat bobbing as you sip, the delicate column contracting, he wonders how his lips would feel against it but is drawn out of the lewd line of thought by your voice, blonde brow raised and mirroring the angle of your own.
“I suppose you’ll just have to find out if I’m the opposite type or not.”
His cheeks turn pink at their high points and you take a satisfied sip from your drink, leaps and bounds ahead of him without trying very hard once again. Despite the current standing, though, you find yourself deeply concerned that he’s matching you quip for quip and you almost veer down the oh so dangerous path of wondering where this man has been your entire life.
You know once you ask that there’s no going back so you simply sit smugly knowing one fact he isn’t privy to quite yet - he may not kiss on the first date but you definitely do and the night is still oh so young.
