friday Leviathan shitpost my fwends
@ Deryn Sharp
sometimes being a fan of something means not wanting them to make any more of it
Let's just start this off by saying the Leviathan series by Scott Westerfeld is by far one of my favorite young adult works ever. I routinely reread it every year, and I in fact have it on hold for pickup tomorrow at my local library.
So take that into account when I say that I'm 4 episodes in, and I wish this show had not been made.
Before I start ranting, I will say, this show is fucking STUNNING to look at. The colors are gorgeous, and even though they changed some of the Darwinist designs I don't have any quarrels with the art direction.
But anyway, on to the show
Okay let's do the math here...
I just finished ep 4, and they're through all of the Book 1 content (other than one detail that i'm guessing will be in the next episode). This show is 12 episodes long. There are three books in the series.
I wouldn't be surprised if they're trying to cram all three books into one series which is just criminal given how shoddily they rushed through book 1.
There are a couple of choices that this show make that I really hate, that I can talk about vaugly enough that I don't think they're really spoilers for the book.
Number one of which being Alek's characterization. I swear, he's not this annoying in the book, I promise but HOLY FUCK is he annoying in this show. Like, wanting to punch his lights out every time he's on screen levels of annoying. Also, why didn't they have someone with an Austrian accent voicing him? They get a Scot for Deryn, but Alek just sounds like a whiny American which is such a weird audio choice. Which leads into...
Number two! They're all just speaking English the whole time (or Japanese depending on if you're watching subbed or dubbed). I usually am someone who's in the 'sub or death' camp, but here, the dub isn't terrible and I wanted Scottish Deryn. Which actually leads to this funny little thing where they occasionally have Deryn singing...but even when you're watching the dub it's still Japanese? Like they never took the time to have the dub VA for Deryn record the songs herself? It was funny at first, but in retrospect feels kinda lazy. Anyway I'm off topic. In the book, language is SUCH a huge role, Alek's noble dialect of speaking is actively a detriment and Dr. Barlow's secret bilingualism is a fun little reveal that throws everyone off balance. Klopp is constantly pulling Alek aside to speak to him in German, and I think that level of depth is really lost by not having it be even a plotpoint.
I think this stems from the fact that it is an anime...which honestly feels like a really weird choice? I mean, again it looks great, but there is so much that the writers deemed unimportant it feels like no one in the writers room read any of the books, just had them badly explained to them.
For example
SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT for the Leviathan book under the cut, because there was a lot of nuance cut out of this show (to its detriment) but there's one example that I find particularly egregious in ep 4

Below is a side by side comparison of Book Borvil and Show Borvil...see if you can spot the difference
Show Borvil...
BOOK BORVIL MY ADORABLE WRETCHED SON
WHY DID THEY HAVE TO MAKE EVERYTHING SO DAMN CUTSY??
It's honestly the WondLa problem again, of wanting everything to be able to be made into stuffable plushie and it's to the detriment of EVERYTHING
i have all the same criticisms and my MAIN ISSUE is deryn being the somehow incompetent and giggly? hashtag not my deryn sharp what the hell
AGREED
i hate incompetent and giggly deryn so much that i've manufactured a way to make my thesis about how BAD BAD BAD it is

Then, all in a flash, Deryn understood. Alek had made another trade. Just like in Istanbul, when Malone had been about to reveal the revolution's plans, and Alek had agreed to tell his life story in exchange for the man's keeping silent.
But this time he's given up his secrets for her.
"Oh," Deryn said softly.
"'Oh,' indeed," the lady boffin said. "That was rather slow, Mr. Sharp. Are you sure you didn't bump your head along with your knee?"
SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP
WE GOT A WHOLE-ASS FANFICTION "Oh..." MOMENT ARE YOU KIDDING MEEEEEEEEEE
"Mr. Sharp, you apparently have the ear -perhaps evens the affections, thought I shutter to think - of the legal heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary."
Barlow def clocked their googly eye at each other lonnggggv before she learned deryns a girl lol
If i have to see one more person brushing off the VERY REAL narrative that deryn sharp isn't cis I'm going to blow everyone up
Alek was gone, swept up in a distant world of power, influence, and peacemaking, maybe forever. How could someone who was in the newspapers every day have anything more to do with Deryn Sharp?
Smacking her upside the head. C'mon, man.
I know, okay, I know that we've been over the fact that Alek's feelings for her are a massive blind spot in Deryn's otherwise incredible ability to read people. And there's the dramatic irony of Deryn wondering if he even cares about her anymore, while in the last chapter Alek mentioned her once every two real-life minutes of audiobook. But I also miss the easy confidence of Deryn in Behemoth, who was so certain that Alek would fall in love with her once he knew it was an option. That was more fun.
Has she really gotten so swept up in class difference and hierarchy that she's forgotten who Alek is as a person? He's not the type of person to abandon his people, and that includes you, dipshit.

At last he pushed her gently away, his voice barely a whisper.
"I'd have done it anyway."
She swallowed. "What do you mean?"
"I would have killed him to save the Leviathan. To save you." He put his hands on her shoulders. "It was the only thing in my mind, when it came time to choose, that I couldn't lose you. That's when I knew."
"Knew what?"
He leaned in to kiss her. His lips were soft against hers, but they kindled something sharp and hard inside her, something that had waited impatiently all the months since this boy had come aboard.
"Oh," she said after it was over. "That."
How do I emphasize an image. I need you all to understand I feel like this x10.
well. In any case.
LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

so is Sharp just... not binding?
at all?
because this is i think the second or third time alek's walked in on Sharp without the flight jacket on and both times Sharp has just (very quietly) panicked.
i suppose it's harder to do the internality of thought / depict Sharp binding when the time can be stolen to do so, but this feels a bit like character-intelligence assassination to have Sharp be quite so careless and scrambling all the time to replace the books and Deryn's meticulous, numerous, and ongoing schemes to keep herself from being found out--binding, pretending to shave, minute behavioral differences down to the way she's supposed to check her fingernails, etc. (Also, Deryn is still only fifteen? And half the reason she gets away with it in the books is she's still young enough to look fairly androgynous in the chest and hip department.)
I get it's a YA anime, you can't just randomly show Sharp topless and wrapping up in the morning, but while I am enjoying Sharp being an awkward bean a bit b/c it's quite cute, Deryn wasn't so careless and sometimes i feel a bit sad that they've written Sharp that way.
Leviathan ep 2:
I see that the episode summaries only say 'Sharp'. Come to think of it, I don't think viewers have been told Deryn's real name yet. Interesting
"Assault" bats??? Is flechette bats not good enough for you. Is Netflix not brave enough to have bats shitting spikes on people
Volger, as the whole squad approaches Lienz wearing tailored suits and purple of all colors: It's important not to look rich and important
Interesting that the show is making Alek such a momma's boy, when in the books he has a strained relationship with her since she's the reason he'll never be emperor
Dr. Barlow is hanging out in France? Also why is she dressed like the fucking Joker
Haven't gotten rid of the other middies yet⦠or are they a higher rank? Is Newkirk one of them?
Implying Dr. Barlow figured it out already⦠on one hand it's kind of weird that such an allegedly perceptive woman didn't catch on in canon, on the other hand the 'I'm a girl.' 'Of course.' 'You knew?' 'No I just make it a rule to never act surprised' was really funny. The gag of Deryn checking her chest was pretty good though.
Hoffman down already?? Stole Alek's cool flare moment and then died rip
The bats spit the flechettes???? COWARDS
Well that's two middies down. Also seeing the whale bleed is a bit more visceral
Blond dickhead is Newkirk?? Are we blending him with the Fitz kid and doing an enemies to friends thing
Referring to the Leviathan as a "she"β¦ I remember there's a policy of using it for beasties, but then ships are shes.
I see the Leviathan has its cilia in the concept art but not in the finished product

it's mlm monday, have some Dylan and Newkirk, ft. Eugene's burgeoning man-crush on Sharp, because one of the funniest things the fandom came up with several years ago about Newkirk (other than his name, s/o Julia for that!) is that he had a minor sexuality crisis about having a crush on Dylan, and then a massive wave of relief when it turned out that Dylan was Deryn and he was still straight after all.
(sorry, lad, you're just a bit bi, but dw, it's like a 1 on the Kinsey scale. Alek's bang-on at 3.)
Sharp is giving everybody sexuality crises, it's so fun.
"Give us some light, your divine princeliness?"
"Certainly, Mr. Sharp," Alek said, pulling out his command whistle. He gave it a studious look, then played the tune.
WHEN did Alek get a command whistle. He's not a crewmember and technically he's still at war with them. Did Deryn ask the Mr. Rigby to get him one? Did she lie about losing hers in Istanbul to get a second one that he could have? Did the officers realize it was just more work to try and keep Alek away from the inner workings of the ship and separate him from Deryn than it was to give him one so he could at least be useful?
I noticed this too! he gets a command whistle between the start of behemoth and the start of goliath and i cannot image how that was even posited. i'm so sure it was deryn's idea lol
