reminder that you cannot call people or things "retarded" around me. we will have a conversation where I explain that I can still tell you the names of 62 people for which I was legally responsible. I will tell you that I loved them
and you will feel like you were being an asshole and wonder why you don't just stop saying it altogether. me too.
if we're friends, you can call me a faggot. there can be a lot of tenderness in that. I got beat up and bullied and just generally treated like a detestable freak by people who called me that word while they did it. hearing it spoken by a loved voice, with clear affection, can be beautiful. it can feel like understanding, forgiveness, absolution, permission, and a thousand other wonderful things. it can be beautiful.
I got called retarded too, but we don't share any special insight into that. it's just a word to us. pick a different one.
a lady with a developmental disability once explained to me that she'd overheard some kids calling each other retarded in the mall we'd visited earlier that day. searching for something to say that might comfort her, I explained that they don't know anything about people like her and so they weren't really talking about her, just being ignorant.
she got angry and said "then they need to pick a different word". and so you need to pick a different word.
don't think this is exclusive to public spaces like the mall or the park or whatever either. she has a tablet and access to the internet, just the same as you do. she can read, write, and make her own decisions. she has a husband.
you don't know anything about her, you need to stop talking about her. pick a different word.
having feelings that contradict your morals is soooo fucking annnoooooyyyiiingggggg. can the emotions and logic department get on the same page im tired of having to like strangle myself into being a tolerable person
2. The Delectable Negro: Human Consumption and Homoeroticism Within US Slave Culture by Vincent Woodard
3. "Abolitionists turned the tables on Europeans by accusing them of being cannibals when they ate sugar tainted with the flesh and blood of slaves."
4. Zombies (which I would class as cannibals, since they were human and need to eat humans to live) have a root in Haitian folklore and represented enslavement.
adding that, if you can find it, cannibal culture by deborah root is about exactly this. the way the white western world is a hungry, destructive force that cannibalizes non-white cultures and creates wealth and status through the cannibal colonization of those cultures.
here's the intro
i almost think there's an essay in bell hooks' black looks about this too? yes! just checked, there's an essay called "eating the other"

At some point in your life, you were taught that being slightly annoying is an unforgivable sin. Maybe it was by your parents or a teacher or a friend or a bully or an older sibling. But someone taught you that being slightly annoying is a crime punishable by death.
You must unlearn this.
You must accept that all people will be annoying at some point or another in their lives, maybe all of their lives, and that this is okay. It is okay for strangers on the bus, it is okay for children in the grocery store, it is okay for people on social media, and it is okay for you.
If you ever want to truly love your fellow humans, if you ever want to truly love yourself, you must have forgiveness for being annoying.
god it's so cool that so many members of the knights moralis are genuinely kind and well-intentioned people. i've seen people say that making them sympathetic hurts the anti-cop narrative, but i really have to disagree. i think that the fact they're good people actually makes it hit even harder, because it shows that the fault is in the very system. if they were all faceless bad guys, it implies that the problems would be fixed if they were replaced by good guys. but it's shown that galga deeply cares about helping people, luluci wants justice for victims of assault, and utowin just wants to be helpful, and even STILL they end up hurting innocent people! if olruggio was trained as a knight, he would probably be just as bad as the rest! the fault is in the system, not the individuals!

Stray Easthies Thoughts (spoiler warning up to CH 97)
I think a lot about how Easthies, despite his MANY flaws, can still be so soft and someone that inspires hope in people without even trying to or likely realising it. He became a light to Utowin and Luluci in different ways and always makes it known that he cares and recognises their achievements and strengths just because he can. He's lenient with the twins and never criticises their overeager personalities despite explicitly stating moments after that 'youthful lack of self-restraint is not freedom, it's chaos' (Chapter 26). He lets his subordinates call him nicknames and treat him with an amount of casualness that would usually be absolutely insane to treat your boss with (Galga and Utowin both calling him 'Eas', Utowin in JP Chapter 97 being so condescending when praising him for eating all of his food that most fan translators translated it to 'good boy' in english, Ekoh practically jumping him for the fun of it), and he cares so deeply for the people around him that when Galga lost his memories his reaction in particular was highlighted (Chapter 57). It was the first time we saw him crack nearly as much as he does in chapter 80, and its because his friend was hurt
Little things like that make it so much more apparent how differently he treats Coco compared to everyone else, too. One second he's reassuring Utowin that he's important and the next he's chasing down a child like a rabid animal. It's not because he doesn't like kids (I actually believe the opposite and would say he's quite fond of children based on a number of things), and any other explanation based solely on Coco's status as an Outsider™️ doesn't feel .. complete to me. His feelings towards Coco seem so deeply personal and we cant say for sure why yet (though we can theorise and BOY do i have theories) and it drives me NUTS. What makes a such a gentle man who cares so deeply about everyone around him crack so much that he's okay with hurting everyone around him, instead?
- End yap session (for now .. i have many more thoughts and theories on Easthies and the Knights Moralis as a whole so if you liked whatever this was watch out for those hehe)
tbh qifrey and easthies as apprentices are so interesting to me as a dynamic
cuz like qifrey went on this long ass quest to find his place in the world and figure out who he was/wanted to be, trying to understand his past so he could believe he had a future, and so on and so forth
and then when it came to his future easthies kinda just went "let's be knights with mama master vinanna"
Luluci is such an interesting character because she’s a victim of the same failings of witch society that cause other characters so much pain, but because of the role the Knights Moralis played in the aftermath of the abusive patronage she endured during her apprenticeship, she chose to seek justice while operating within the rules of the system that allowed her abuse to happen in the first place where the others either distance themselves from it or abandon it entirely.
