So, there's another aspect to the chicken plan, really. It's one Mumbo, uh, wouldn't normally bring up, really. Not worth talking about. Not always likely to succeed. But these days, he thinks it might just succeed, which is good, because he'd never be allowed to go through with this if it didn't, and--
So what he's got to do, Mumbo knows, is not tell Grian he's dying.
Which sounds silly when he says it like that. A few years ago and he wouldn't have ever considered it. Grian would move heaven and earth for Mumbo, he knows. Grian would find a way to stop it. He would. And certainly, they've been growing apart a little recently--

He's grown apart from quite a few people, now that he thinks about it. That doesn't matter; he's built a perfect town and a perfect home for himself and he's always kind of wanted to be a supercomputer anyway? It seems like the sort of thing that would be fun. The next step up from building a base that lives: being a base that lives. The chicken is a means to an end, and that end is a really wonderful time, and all he has to do is not tell anyone.
He is very good at not telling anyone things. He knows if he tells anyone, but especially if he tells Grian, then they will do--something. Stop this, somehow. Stop him. Cry, probably? He's pretty sure people cry when they talk about dying. Then again, it doesn't make sense to cry, not really. It's not a sad occasion.
It doesn't make sense that, every time he imagines explaining himself to Grian, the thing he sees in his mind's eye is crying.
After all, Mumbo is making himself immortal.
And if he's doing it alone, well, it's not as though hermit isn't in the name.
