Good Bones, by Maggie Smith / Witch Hat Atelier, by Kamome Shirahama
[Image ID: Poem lines interspersed with manga panels.
Life is short, though I keep this from my children.
[Qifrey lifting up Coco]
Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine
in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways,
[Qifrey and Olruggio as children]
a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways
I’ll keep from my children.
[Qifrey alone in his tower, and getting hit with lightning as he experiments with the ink bottle]
The world is at least
fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative
estimate, though I keep this from my children.
[A young Luluci running away from abstract, shadowy grabbing hands]
For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird.
[Qifrey in the waterlogged coffin]
For every loved child, a child broken, bagged,
sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world
[Engendale with his slimy brimmed hat]
is at least half terrible, and for every kind
stranger, there is one who would break you,
though I keep this from my children.
[Qifrey with a peaceful expression, a herd of cattle, flying birds, and a shot of a traveling cart from behind with Qifrey and his apprentices inside]
I am trying
to sell them the world.
[The atelier and the field around it]
Any decent realtor,
walking you through a real shithole, chirps on
about good bones: This place could be beautiful,
right?
[Qifrey showing Coco the windowway in a shower of flower petals.]
You could make this place beautiful.
End ID]
I fucking love Characterization via Background Design…
knowledge long forgotten
got really into reading item descriptions on this playthrough. anyway did you know the silent princess is one of the only raw materials with a cooking effect to not explicitly list that effect in its description

math prof whose thesis was about how spheres behave in 15,000+ dimensions decided to kill 5 minutes at the end of class by explaining to us why spheres are spiky in the 10th dimension
Come on man
okay as far as I understand it: if you have a square of side length 4, split into quarters with a circle of radius 1 completely filling each subsquare, the largest circle you can fit through the MIDDLE of that has radius √2 - 1. If you take it to 3 dimensions, with a cube of side length 4 filled with 8 spheres of radius 1 each, the largest SPHERE you can fit through the centre of those has radius √3 - 1.
when you take this to the 10th dimension, the largest sphere you can fit through this 10 dimensional cube is √10 - 1, which is larger than 2 (half the side length of the 10 dimensional shape containing it), meaning the radius of this sphere is LARGER than the side length and poking OUT of the sides of the container. spiky...
the 'amount' irt the unit circle (x^2 + y^2 = 1, x^2 + y^2 + z^2 =1, etc) at higher dimensions is apparently unevenly distributed among the variables and why the equation for higher dimensional spheres is spiky. what this distribution behaviour is and why this is the case is between him and God and probably his thesis board
I got home 20 minutes ago and all I've been able to do is sit here like this thinking about spheres
heaven, are you watching
This is in no way the best way to post it but it is the only way I could get the format to stay

Yo i saw that shadowgast art about the au where they were childhood friends??? In Xhorhas???? I know you said it was underdeveloped, but I'd love to know anything more you have!
AAAAHHHHH UMMMMMMMMMMM it's INSANELY underdeveloped. literally the only thoughts i have about it are... like what if caleb and essek grew up together in rosohna and went to the same magic school. caleb is a xhorhas transplant (maybe his parents are diplomats and moved there for business). essek is the child prodigy top-of-his-class. caleb is the newcomer who bests him. academic rivalry ensues... :]
Interesting, but I feel like I’d want to lean into the different social standings more. Maybe Leofric and Una were good with the land that when they fled the Empire they managed to help with some of Xhorhas’s fucked up farming and recovery situation, and Bren’s homeschooled magical efforts in that area get noticed.
your brain is HUUUUUGE i fear. i think that makes a lot of sense too. it’s possible i imagine them as working some kind of agricultural export situation, who then were hired to find some kind of way to develop arid soil for xhorhas… bren starts attending a local school in the area… gets recommended for a gifted program/attends some sort of regional magic/spell-writing competition and goes against a young, freshfaced essek…. the possibilities are endless
@valakiir no no Kiri, keep talking, this is brilliant and I love it
WAIT THIS IS SMART…………
i actually wrote a slightly angsty script similar to this for my screenwriting class …. 😭 please listen to this idea high court.
essek and caleb were entered into a spell-making competition where the best young minds of xhorhas labor to pitch and demonstrate powerful utilitarian spells to impress a panel of judges. (xhorhassian science fair). essek pitches wristpocket, and caleb pitches tether essence. caleb ends up coming second place. he’s extremely salty about it.
fast forward to the end of the semester at Rosohna Magic School Working Title and the cruel professor announces that they’ll be giving out a prestigious award to the best-performing student. everyone’s antsy to see who it is. professor pauses for dramatic effect and then announces that actually… there are /two/ students who tied for first place. spotlight concentrates on them. professor says….. since this award can only be given to one student… may the best wizard win.
a young essek, not extremely keen on being in the spotlight, but prideful, and a young caleb, still reeling from his snubbed second place, fight to the death (figuratively because they have medics on hand) .
YOU decide who wins!
(in my original script, where essek is more of a pushover, caleb is on death’s door. caleb says Wait! and offers to rekindle their friendship and mend their rift caused by their rivalry. he then cruelly casts a version of tether essence where it heals the caster while damaging the victim (while essek is distracted by the offer). slams him to the ground, knocking essek out, winning the fight.)
BUT i can also imagine a reality where they’re so evenly matched that the teachers call a draw… or one of them narrowly wins and they both reconcile in the nurse’s office… or caleb, in his rage and spite at being a kid who had to work his way to the top vs. nepobabyessek) unleashes a kind of raw fire spell so powerful that it causes structural damage to the lecture hall and is then dubbed The Incident of the year.
youuuuu decide….
All of this is so good, oh my god.
I love both the idea of their fight being declared a draw and the idea of one of them winning narrowly and then them having a heart-to-heart reconciliation in the nurse’s office. So what if, perhaps, the best of both worlds?
I’m a massive fan of magical exhaustion, so what if one of them narrowly wins, knocks out the other, but they’re so drained from the fight that they pass out before they can be declared the winner, and they both get ushered off to be healed as a tie is called? And then they bicker about who won after they’re awake again until finally one of them has a realization of “wait what are we doing, you’re the only person who actually understands me here” and they start to reconcile their rivalry from there.
this is so wonderful 😭😭😭 i’m here for it!!!!!!!!!
its the teen movie trope of You did great out there… actually…. and Heh you’re not too bad yourself. Let’s Go Study Together (TWO LONG YEARS OF MUTUAL PINING: START!)

Hey, no homo, but I am sitting on the broken swing set out back in the perfect, quiet, 2:00am blackness and picturing the softness of your voice and the darkness of your eyes with such perfect and terrible clarity that it feels like I'm choking on my own heartbeat.
Now I'm eating croutons straight out of the bag.
Still no homo ?
I'm gonna level with you, friend: I am eating these croutons gay style.
