I’m kind of conflicted about how I feel about Captain Clark’s design. On one hand, I don’t feel very scared when I look at him. He’s very tall and his features are a bit off but I don’t think he’s uncanny enough. On the other hand, him not being too scary really allows me to feel bad for him. He seemed very scared/confused most of the time and the way he cried out for Mary tugged on my heartstrings a bit. Overall, I think I like his design. The movie wants us to empathize with Clark so by extension we should empathize with Captain Clark and I think his design helps with that.

Note how in Nope (2022), the White cinematographer Antlers Holt is only able to get "the impossible shot" due to the hardwork and ingenuity of 3 people of colour.

He then decides that "we" don't deserve the impossible, and puts not only himself, but those 3 people who's work he just dismissed, at risk of death

Antlers dies, but he almost takes Angel and Emerald with him, and throws away the work OJ did, that he risked his life for. It's a completely selfish act.
