the first time sam really hears misa try to chirp someone back it's so bad he almost trips on his skates and fall face first on the ice. it's someone saying something along the lines of 'aren't tired of being the weak link in your line ?' after a big hit that left misa slumping against the boards, grimacing, and misa's answer is so honest, so fucking genuine 'i'm not that weak, i can skate fast'. when sam hears that, notices misa's frown, the confusion on his face, he can't help but find it so unbelievably funny. so when he shakes his head and skates towards his own bench he knock shoulders with misa and says 'dude that's some lame ass chirp you got here' and misa blushes, annoyed but also embarassed.

fast forward, they become sharks and suddenly sam tries to chirp misa like he does with litteraly everyone else, but the effects are so widly different ?? like misa either stare in silence or laugh a bit too loudly and it leaves sam confused because he can tell misa's real or fake laugh. and this is SO fake. so at first he wonders if misa just doesn't like him, if sam is the problem here. but then he hears eky chirp misa, the whole joke falling flat as misa answers genuinely, trying to prove to his teammate that he is, in fact, wrong. and there it clicks. sam isn't the problem, misa just doesn't chirp like anyone else on the team.

and to back this, he has a vivid memory of misa chirpring a guy for his 'abnormally long feet, which probably are the reason why he physically can't skate faster' and the joke is too long, it lacks the necessary bite, but when sam looks at misa's face he realizes how genuine and hilarious this is to misa. so he laughs too, because what the fuck is wrong with that little freak.
