hey so I made a Mydei x reader fic for my friend so i thought I'd share it here.
Summary: After Mydei kills Eurypon, you take him aside to discuss the future of Castrum Kremnos because it's stressing you out with the downfall of the city and the black tide coming in. It doesn't end well.
Warnings: fast-paced, slight canon divergence, probably OOC but eh im tired
Tags: hurt/no comfort, angst, war, GN!reader, i should probably write fluff after this

Mydei leaned against the tone pillar, heaving breaths as he looked down at his hands. The golden gloves he wore in battle, both his weapon and protection drenched in crimson. Some hints of gold splattered across, none other than his own blood. The adrenaline was dying down, the fierce beating of his heart no longer pounding in his chest, but instead a gentle drum underneath his skin. The clashes of swords ringed in his ears along with the battle cry of his companions, the sounds no longer drowning out now that he was forced to face the reality of what he'd just done. For his suffering in the sea of souls, for the cruelness displayed in Castrum Kremnos, and for taking the life of Gorgo, Mydei's beloved mother. The rage he felt upon seeing his father again after his banishment was an emotion like no other, Mydei couldn't describe it. Pure, white hot anger as he stabbed his father right through the heart, a mere breath of wind compared to what Mydei had to endure ever since he was thrown out into the sea of souls when he was but an infant. He snapped out of his thoughts when he felt a sharp tug on his arm, about to dive right back into battle, until he saw your face and his gaze instantly softened. However your expression didn't match his, a distressed frown on your lips with furrowed brows and how you urged him to come with you were already enough indicators to tell him that the alarms were blaring in your head.
It was a blur when you took him, the sounds around him drowning out and no real processing from the crumbling pillar he was leaning against to one of the hidden rooms within the palace that only him and a few others knew of. He silently questioned how you discovered this room in the first place, but said nothing because there was clearly a more urgent matter.
you locked the door behind yourself, sealing shut in case of a wandering intruder. Your breaths ragged, chest pierced with worry, you nearly tripped over yourself as you went back to Mydei. He didn't approach you, legs fixed into place. He knew it was best he dont come physically close to you, as the atmosphere was already crowded with war. But he couldn't lie and say that his heart wasn't racing at this sudden movement, questioning why you even had to drag him out of battle.
"Mydei." You whispered sternly "Castrum Kremnos is destroyed."
For a moment, he didn't say anything, all he did was cross his arms over his chest with a soft exhale. "I'm aware. It's what the prophecy had promised since I was born."
You marched forward at him, as if it would get him to make some ground-breaking realization. "But— it's not just an outbreak from the people!" You urged "the black tide is here. The same madness that took over Nikador."
At that, Mydei stiffened, though he made no such dismissal or any other reaction. You kept going.
"What are we supposed to do? We can't just— just lose Castrum Kremnos, it's home to so many of us, our culture, it's familiar to us, what are we supposed to do Mydei? You're the heir to the throne."
At his point, he stared down at the marble floor, gaze hardened. You were right, Castrum Kremnos is home to many, not just physically but also mentally. It gives so many a sense of belonging, with the many traditions and culture, it's not easy to just let all of it go in the blink of an eye. But within the reality, what was choice is he meant to choose? The black tide has already proved almost unstoppable and an extremely difficult feat even against the fiercest warrior in all of Kremnos.
It was as though a decision was already made: they would lose Castrum Kremnos. He let out a harsh sigh, now was not the time to take his sweet time and think, especially with much action above them, on other levels in the palace and even on the ground of the city. But when he looked up back into your eyes, every strong wall he held up ceased and crumbled. He leaned back against an old bookshelf as he finally met your eyes again, the panicked glint clearer than before. He swallowed before answering you.
"We'd have to go to Okhema with those who still live." He replied quietly.
In a heartbeat, you went from distressed to pure shock. Just… leave Castrum Kremnos? Leave behind the dead bodies, the heritage, the history that it held? The Kremnoan dynasty that lasted years upon years?
It was like falling into the deep ocean with how all sound seemed to drown out and everything was blurry until you focused on the blond man in front of you.
"What?" You uttered out breathless. But before he could explain his plan, you had already burst.
"Leave Castrum Kremnos?!" You yelled at him "you want us to just leave?!"
Mydei said nothing as he cast his gaze downwards.
"You're a coward, Mydeimos!" You spat at him, pressing a harsh finger into his chest. "You're saying that were not even going to fight, were just going to leave? Like that? Like mere prey?"
"My dear, that's not what I said—"
"Don't you dare call me that."
His breath hitched at your denial of the nickname. Not once had you rejected him, and now he was taken aback.
"You are not the prince of Castrum Kremnos, you are but a mere coward who accepts defeat the second they raise their spear at you! How could you, Mydeimos, abandon your home?"
Mydei opened his mouth to say something, eyes widened in agitation, but not a word got the chance to escape his lips when—
CRACK!
Your chest raised and fell with the heavy breaths you were taking, your hand held awkwardly in the air as you stared right back at him with eyes just as fierce as a lion's, if not even more.
"What else are we supposed to do?" He shouted back, holding your wrist tightly in his grip, causing you to gasp. "You think I want to leave? You think I want to leave my city, after just defeating the monster that ruled on the throne?" He shot back.
You snatched your hand back from him "I didn't say that you wanted to leave, all I'm asking is that why are you so easy to let go of our home?" You replied, though this time your tone was laced with something, else, something heavier than the emotions you were already conveying to him. He choked on a breath when he realized the wetness welling up in your eyes, even if you didn't feel it already, too blinded by outrage.
"[name] I—"
"Nevermind, Mydeimos." You murmured glaring at him and refusing to let the tears stream down your cheeks. Almost hesitantly, you reached for the ring on your forth finger, slipping it off delicately before you threw it to the ground, right before his feet.
"I stay here, whether you like it or not. Whether I die or not."
Mydei looked down to the ring before him, rolling up to him until it bumped against his foot and rolled off in the opposite direction, eventually stopping and tripping over, revealing the pretty symbol etched across it. He then looked up to you, his heart gradually sinking in his chest. He couldn't lose his love, no, not like this. Not due to the black tide and the loss of Castrum Kremnos, his heart would never be able to bare the reality.
But what was said was said, you spared him no time to speak before your heels already began to click in the distance and you were gone from his vision. Mydei fell to his knees, gently taking the ring in his palm. It wasn't supposed to happen like this. The both of you were supposed to live a rich, fulfilling life together and always, to never follow in the footsteps of his father. And yet, he had already lost his lover. Not in the way his father did, no, but it didn't mean there was a chance of you coming back.
➵ Notes; This is set in the modern AU! — did y'all know that yearning is Phainon's middle name?
➵ 1.9k Words.
➵ Warnings; possible OOC!
You are the companion to Phainon's bright sun. The moon in an endless sky.
You're the one to ground Phainon in moments of chaos, he is the one to lift you up in moments of sabotage, and both of you carry a light with drastically different intensity, yet actively aid one another to shine the path ahead.
But before you know it, the once warm hand begins to burn.
Phainon's hands are gentle. They always swallow yours in their embrace, even back when the two of you lack the height to reach the kitchen sink. Until now, when the two of you reached beyond your parents shoulders, he still drowns you in his warmth.
It started slowly, but consistent; your heart races every time he's within your proximity, the smiles you share with him has your cheeks heated for hours even long after the two of you went your separate ways, and a brush of skin with him—no matter how subtle—leaves you stiff.
For years, you survived endless teasing from family members and friends regarding your relationship with Phainon. Sometimes their words brushed you the wrong way, even when you knew they never did it out of malice.
Perhaps the words weren't the cause of your stillness, but the weight they carry. The impending realization that you've caught something you cannot avoid nor bury.
You hated it.
But how can you possibly ignore a light within this endless void?
You refrain from naming this feeling you have for him, because ‘in love' sounded shallow. Years spent with him, listening to each other's fears and wishes, and having it be defined in two words seemed… wrong.
But you do love him. That's a certainty that you have not even a speck of doubt in.
You loved how he lights up the moment he spots you, you loved how loudly he laughs at your jokes—even if they were painfully unfunny—and you loved how his eyes seem to fixate, as if the surroundings have disappeared from his view and only you remain.
He is the sun that greets you at the beginning of every day, while you're the moon that accompanies him in dark nights.
But this… feeling has its grasp over your heart, squeezing every moment you spend by Phainon's side. It didn't sadden you as much as it annoyed you deeply.
You want to stop it. Crush it. Make it disappear.
It ruins your view of the relationship you've had with Phainon. It blurs the lines of platonic affection and more. It makes you stop in your tracks and take a step back.
It doesn't take long for you to deduce that the only cure to all of this is Phainon.
That thought alone has you groaning in frustration.
What is it with humans and their hearts creating problems for themselves?
You're completely satisfied with simply being one of Phainon's closest friends. So why does your heart urge for more?
Why does it place you on a tightrope, expecting you to reach the other side and claim a price when you don't even know if you want it?
Understanding the symptoms all connect to him, you create your own temporary (which hopefully turns permanent) cure; limit your interactions with Phainon. But make sure he doesn't notice.
This medication of yours will be a lifelong one, and to begin this journey of recovery—you stop your usually fast response to Phainon's messages.
First week, you'll let the chat marinate for two hours. Next week, you'll double it to four. The pattern repeats for the upcoming weeks.
Of course, it doesn't take long for Phainon to notice, but this is where being in different schools comes in handy. When he questions, you deny (after letting the message dry for two hours) and reason that school activities have gotten hectic—not a total lie. Phainon seems to understand, but urges you to inform him if anything happens. He's always up to help.
You didn't respond. Leaving him on read. No doubt causing a small crack between the two of you.
It pained you, it really did. But drowning in self-pity will not help the situation, you're committed now—if anything, you don't blame him for leaving after this. It's probably for the best anyway.
After a few weeks of slow responses, each one getting drier.
You take the next step, intensifying this treatment, by avoiding him. Not flatly, but just enough to make it clear that you’re occupied throughout a gathering by hanging around new friend groups, sitting beside another friend, or never letting your side be vacant.
This seemed to deepen the crack, and for the first time you see Phainon's glare be directed towards you. Not with anger, but.. With helpless hope that you'd come up to him, even if just to greet with a smile. His eyes are unable to tear themselves away from your figure, even when it pained him. His hands, tucked by his sides, tremble ever so slightly. Just on the tether of launching forward and just… returning you to his side.
And you waited, curious on what he'd do once he reached his breaking point. Whether he'd march forward or cry on the spot.
Yet, he did neither.
He reciprocated your action, not making an effort to approach you and busied himself, whether by chatting with the old men gathered at a table or listening to gossiping aunties. Anything to keep his gaze away from your figure.
But have you forgotten? Phainon is relentless. And for you? You'll have a bigger chance of escaping a hungry predator than Phainon. But with the way he's walking towards you, he might as well be one.
Once the gathering ends and people are returning to their homes, Phainon manages to catch you by the wrist in a firm grip and kindly asks permission to borrow you from your parents (who are unaware of the turmoil and hands you over with a chuckle).
He takes you to the spot you've spent the majority of your childhood, the big old willow tree. With the same tire swing still hanging off of its branch. Even the wood bark has your initials marked into it by Phainon, a day after the two of you graduated middle school.
“What did I do?” He released his grip on your wrist.
You're quick to answer, “Nothing.”
“Yes, I'm well aware of that. So what is it, [First]?” he's kind enough to not appear as angry as his tone might suggest, especially the way he delivers his questions.
The words fail to reach your tongue and the two of you stand there in silence.
He lets out a heavy breath, “.. Just, please tell me what I did wrong.. I'll apologize for it..” appearing a lot more exhausted yet unwilling to stop his pursuit. “.. I'll fix it.”
The last thing you want is to make a spontaneous confession. “It's really nothing, Phainon.” You look over his shoulder, trying to plan how exactly you'll escape this situation. “I've just been busy with school work.. And there's nothing wrong hanging around new people.”
“I never said anything was wrong with that, what I want to know is what I did.” He takes a step forward, and you can hear the drumming of your heart. Deafening any sound in your vicinity.
“.. [First],” you hate the way his voice softens, carrying your name with this sense of longing. “I don’t—I really don't know what I did this time.. I won't get upset with your answer, whatever it is, just.. Don't leave me in the dark, please.”
Slowly, and hesitantly, his hand grasps the end of your sleeve. His knuckles turn pale from how tightly he's gripping. “.. Talk to me. Let me hear your voice.”
Your medication is proving to be difficult to maintain, and the cure is being dangled right in front of you. “.. I already told you—it's nothing.”
He frowns, but appears more desperate than upset at your repeated answer. “Did something happen? Did someone bother you at school?” his eyes seem to turn sharper at the thought. “[First].. I'm your closest friend. I'm here for you, remember? I'll listen to your every word.”
“I know you will—it's just..” How are you supposed to explain the on-going battle between you and your own heart?!
His hand drifts down to hold yours, his grip unbearably gentle. “Take your time.” He urges you with a nod.
Does he know how weak you are to his eyes? Those blue orbs seem to put a spell on you, one that weakens your resolve which usually ends with him receiving exactly what he wants.
And this is no different.
“.. I—” you stagger back as your head spins with realization of what's about to happen. Phainon’s grip prevents you from losing your balance any further.
“Careful—!”
“I fell for you!” the words spilling out of your mouth in one sharp breath.
The quiet that follows is unbearable. Wind passes by your frozen figures, in hopes of melting away the tension. It was the best sentence you could come up with at the moment—because everything else seems to fall apart the moment they reach your tongue.
Your eyes are unable to stray from the grass standing between your feet.
But a sudden fall snaps your gaze towards him—
Phainon's legs lost their strength, and he dropped down to his knees right before you. His grip remains on your wrist, noticeably shaky and you can feel sweat forming over the surface. His hair hangs over his face as he stares down. Refusing to meet your gaze.
“.. Phainon..?” You call out to him, nervous on what expression his face may hold.
A beat passed before he gradually lifted his head. You're greeted by the sight of his fully red face, the color traveling all the way to the tips of his ears. “.. You—You took me off guard..” He whispers out, forcing out a laugh from his throat.
Heat begins to form over your cheeks. “Can you get up..?”
He pauses for a moment, his gaze falls down before returning to you. “.. I'm afraid not.” Which only deepens the color over his face. Despite that, he tries using his free hand to push himself up but ends up back in his spot when his legs begin to shake. “.. I—I really can't get up..”
“It's—It's fine..” You lower yourself to his level, settling on the grass. Uncaring of the stain it might leave on your clothes. “.. I should probably apologize for the way I've been.. Treating you. And I'll understand if you don't accept my confession. I mean, I wouldn't either cause of how I've been acting these past few weeks—”
Phainon launches himself forward, and successfully causes the words to freeze in your throat as he buries his head in the crook of your neck.
Your body visibly shakes at the closeness, even after years of shared affection—all being platonic—this is the only one to make your heart lurch in its place.
He takes a breath, inhaling your scent as he pulls away but not far. Just enough to stare into your wide eyes. “.. I was supposed to confess first, you know. I've been planning it in my journal since elementary..” He huffs, and you swear a pout is forming over his cheeks. “.. And in order to be forgiven, I have a request..”
Your breath hitch, “.. And that is?”
His eyes narrow as a grin creeps its way to his face. “A kiss would be nice.”
Fanfic writing comes in handy once you realize that torturing your favorite character with the yearning you've suffered from because of them and lowkey self-projecting is really fun. And wow, I enjoyed it a lot more than I realized. (*ˊᗜˋ*)
synopsis ; your neighbor that had a secret crush on you attempted to leave hints and roses about his love for you. on valentines day, he left a little fluffy surprise.
dawn’s opine ; SAY IT AIN’T SO, I WILL NOT GO. TURN THE LIGHTS OFF, CARRY ME HOME. NA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NA (title from all the small things by blink-182) by the way this fic was supposed to be written during VALENTINES but clearly we aren’t there.
1k , fluff , modern!au-ish , neighbor!phainon , snowy exists as a medium , amphoreus isn’t doomed , this is so fucking cheesy
honkai star rail masterlist !
IT WAS ALWAYS AT THE SAME HOUR without fail. there would always be a bouquet of roses by the stairs every two weeks, with a little message that wrote something like : "you were really beautiful today, i hope these cheer you up :)" in the most delicate handwriting ever.
you paid no mind to the roses though, as they did, in fact, cheer you up every time.
you lived in aedes elysiae. it was somewhere by the seaside.
the smell of wood from the docks, the scent of wheat when children ran in them, and somehow the stench of fish. it wasn’t exactly a bad stench, but it wasn’t really easy on the nose.
point is, it was safe and just above the average population for a small fishing village. to you, this was home.
then there was that boy that looked like the gods had graced them with a part of their beauty and hope and gave it to him. that boy was phainon. he was young man, an admirable warrior, and a lovely neighbor.
he’s talked to you a few times. he was cheery and fun to be around. he always respected you and brought you food a few times with the excuse of "oh! i made too much food" with the sweetest, sheepish smile to his face.
recently, you’ve been receiving roses. they were in your favorite color. you didn’t pay no mind to it and picked it up when it read, "i hope this’ll cheer you up, you looked a bit down today :(" which was true, you were in a sour mood due to a stomachache that did not want to let you go, no matter how many times you’ve sat down or took some pills to ease the pain. you probably ate something bad that day.
the roses did lighten things up a little bit, and you kept them in a vase. when phainon came around the next week, you noticed that his eyes were on the roses for a little too long before looking at you again.
ever since then, every thursday, every two weeks, special colored roses would appear on your doorstep with a little note that seemed to brighten the heart. they were always sweet and heartfelt, nothing creepy.
phainon would always make sure that you got them and ensured that no one saw him dropping them off. if you knew, he’d probably faint.
truth was, phainon was kind of shy. he didn’t know how to act if he saw a pretty person in front of him.
so the only thing he could do was play secret admirer.
leaving little notes and your favorite colored flowers was the least phainon could do. sometimes, he’d slip in your favorite chocolates too, just to see that smile on your face when you receive them.
whenever phainon came by your place to chat, he’d always eye and smile at what happened to the roses. they were neatly kept in a vase on a table by the door, next to some dog treats you always gave his dog whenever he yapped by.
he hoped you didn’t notice his odd behavior once the bouquet thing started happening, but he knew you weren’t dumb.
he heavily disliked- not hated, disliked- your perceptiveness. he usually admired it, but right now he didn’t like it.
today was a day where phainon wanted to pass away.
phainon promised himself he’d confess his feelings on valentines day. he’d repeatedly mustered up the courage and kept practicing his confession in the mirror for the next four months before february. but today, his anxiety levels skyrocketed and he didn’t know what to do.
snowy was watching him slowly panic, yapping and jumping to place his forelegs on his legs. yapping again and again as if he was telling him to shut up and get out there.
phainon looked at snowy once. "buddy, i don’t know what to do. what if—" snowy barked again, stopping his intrusive thoughts.
but a bright idea came into phainon’s mind. it would be cheesy, but snowy was always an amazing icebreaker.
…
you got a notification on your phone for movement from your doorbell ring camera. were they your yaoi stickers?
you hurriedly went down to inspect the door, peeking through the peephole, only to see… absolutely nothing.
you opened the door to see what it was, and there he was.
phainon’s dog, snowy, sitting with a bouquet of roses and your own personal favorite flowers on his back, strapped with a harness, and a letter clamped in his mouth. his tail was wagging happily when he saw you emerge.
"what d’you get for me, buddy?" you smiled, crouching down to pet his furry head, slightly jumping when your hand touched his head. you gave him a treat.
you gently took the letter from his mouth and opened it. it smelled like the sun… and dog breath.
"this is a really terrible form of confession but i got too shy. i promised myself i’d be brave enough but that was a big lie. i’m so sorry, i wish i could’ve done this better. :( will you be my valentine anyway, [name]?"
you knew it was phainon for a while, but you didn’t quite have the proof yet. you held the letter with a smile on your face. "come on snowy, let’s go back to phainon." you ushered. he yipped and jumped around. luckily, his place was just a 30 second walk from yours.
you went up to phainon’s house and knocked on his door. you knew he was in there. you could see a tuft of white hair peeking out from the window.
you waited patiently until he was ready to open the door. it creaked open with tension.
"hey, [name]! uh, did you—" you didn’t wait for him to speak and pressed your lips on his. phainon stood still for a heartbeat or two.
did you just really do this? oh my god, are you actually kissing me?
but before he could pull you in closer, you already pulled away. his hand hovered over your waist, slightly trembling.
"does that answer your question?" you asked. he nodded frantically. this must be a dream come true.

Phainon would be the type of husband to embrace you before sleep, his body emits warmth yet he only tightens his hold once he feels you moving ever so slightly away.
Phainon would be the type of husband to empress you the best he could, like how a bird finds a partner, he too would try to bring you the prettiest thing he could find. To give to you, pretty necklaces, rings or even pretty gems he found during his time fighting.
Phainon would be the type of husband to keep a photo of you in his pocket to bring out and admire each time he feels lost or in a dangerous mission, he has to remind himself to stay strong not only for amphorious, but for you as well. To bring you the tomorrow he knows you wish for.
Phainon would be the type of husband to try and never show you his faults, either from a small thing like him burning the food to him sacrificing himself for the greater good that he knows that you won't accept him to do. He just wants to be the person you rely on, now and forever.
(Huge emphasis on rely on, he loves it when you do, even the smallest acts like him opening a jar for you.)
Phainon Is not the easily jealous type but he will be if snowy keeps your attention all to himself.
Phainon is the type of husband to call you all sorts of endearment, like beloved or honey or even Καρδιά μου, or Ψυχή μου, the latter just slips out naturally out more often.
At the end of the day, Phainon is the type of husband who likes to look up at the moon, it reminds him of you shining all over his world even the dark bits in him.
The ocean reflects the moon gentle light, he hopes to be your ocean and reflect your light the same one you guide him with. But alas he could only be the sun.
He never realizes that the reason you have your light in the first place was because of the one he emits.
(He's just too busy pouring all his love on you to notice)
content warning: phainon x reader, sfw, skincare talk but i’m not an expert i just wanted something fluffy and domestic
“stay still.” you scolded, your eyes trained on phainon—whose head was on your lap.
“i’ll try.” he laughed warmly, white lashes a-flutter as you gently pressed a fluffy warm towel across his wet face—as you dried him off from when you had washed his face a minute ago. as you finished drying his face, his eyes opened and peered up at you, his beloved, quietly, attentively. you’re concentrating as you pour liquid into your palm and you meet his gaze before you matched his smile.
“close your eyes, i’ll be patting the toner onto your face now.” he obeyed naturally, though he does flinch when you begin to pat the liquid across his cheeks. he pretended to whine when you pat a little too firmly and you giggle in turn.
“big baby.” you teased before your warm hands pull away and he opened his eyes eagerly to look up at you again.
“but i’m your big baby.” you rolled your eyes at his words and you pinched his nose but the smile on your lips is undeniably in love as you carefully pulled out a small vial that came with a dropper.
“what’s this?”
“serum.” you answered, “I’m trying something new. your pretty face has been dry because of the weather, so this should help hydrate your skin.”
he only hum as you dropped dollop of cool serum on his forehead, cheeks then chin. he flinched briefly at the cool liquid but he sighed dreamily as you used the pad of your thumbs to massage it into his skin. your hands warm the product, which soothes him even further to a point of drowsiness.
“why…” he yawned as you pulled your hands away, twisting the cap open for the last product of the night: moisturiser. “why do this anyways?”
“don’t you want to take care of your pretty face?” you teased as you spread another product across his face again—from the scent alone he recognised it as the floral face moisturiser that you always used on him.
“but you will love me even when i’m ugly.” he muttered sleepily and you laughed, your hands rubbed slow circles across his cheeks then his temples, which lulled him into an even deeper sleep.
“you aren’t wrong.” you say honestly. “my hero will always be my hero… but i suppose, this is just another way for me to take care of you... as you have always taken care of me.” you spread the length of your fingers across the slope of phainon’s cheeks, then the sharp line of his jaw—then you bend down, brushing your lips across your deliverer’s slumbering forehead.

. ꕤ 。 ˚⋆ written for... #TEA99 !! — featuring myu's blend! : a hibiscus flower tea with sugar cubes in a pink cup, and a side order of smoked salmon sandwich and cheesy vegetable garden tart (fluff + childhood friends to lovers + "can't you just stay here and kiss me forever?" + heart-to-heart conversation + alternate universe)
sypnosis. [ 1.6k words ] pilot!phainon x office-worker!reader. they're adults. living together. established relationship. they kiss a few times but its very cute and sfw so i dont think i have to warn you there.
usagi's note: it was in fact 3:41 AM as i started writing the fic. this isn't the fic i was cooking up for the phaichompers as i posted a few days ago, this was more of a spur of the moment idea i had and u know i get possessed (LOL). enjoy phainon lvrs!
3:41 AM.
The alarm tone began with a soft vibration against the nightstand.
You ignored it, snuggling into the warmth of your sheets, burying your face deeper into the pillow.
It buzzed again.
You squeezed your eyes shut, hoping that maybe, if you tried hard enough, the alarm would shut itself up and you'd have a few more minutes to enjoy lounging in bed—and maybe even a few more minutes of sleep…
Then a third time.
You sighed and reached out an arm to click a button, not even sure if it's been snoozed or dismissed.
"...It's still dark," you mumbled into the pillow, eyes refusing to open.
"It isn't."
A smile tugged at your lips before you even looked at him.
Phainon had already been awake.
Of course he had.
He always woke before you did, though he rarely moved. Instead, he simply laid there, watching the sleepy little expressions you made before consciousness finally caught up with you.
His arms remained wound snugly around your waist, his chest warm against your back. One of his hands rested lazily over yours, thumb tracing absent circles across your skin.
You yawned, "The sun isn't even up yet."
"It is."
"...Liar."
"I've seen it."
"You've dreamed the idea of it."
A quiet laugh rumbled through his chest, "We both have work,” he murmured.
And still, neither of you made the slightest effort to move.
Silence settled over the apartment again.
You sighed dramatically.
"If we pretend we're dead, maybe our bosses will understand."
"They'll probably just call."
"Then we'll pretend we're ghosts."
"I don't think ghosts pay rent."
"...You're ruining my fantasy,” you huffed.
He chuckled again, lowering his forehead between your shoulder blades.
His embrace somehow tightened without becoming restrictive, arms snaking higher on your body.
Just a few more minutes, he seemed to say.
You didn't mind.
You never did.
The years had changed almost everything about the two of you.
You'd grown taller, he'd become broader.
Your schedules had become cluttered with meetings, his with flight details.
Your calendars marked with deadlines, bills, grocery lists, chores, and laundry waiting to be folded.
The simplicity of childhood had disappeared somewhere between graduation and your first apartment together.
Yet somehow, this remained.
His warmth.
His heartbeat.
The familiar comfort of someone who had always been home.
"You know," you murmured, "when we were kids, I thought adults had everything figured out."
His breath seeped through your shirt, humming as he agreed sleepily.
"I thought they'd wake up excited every morning, like, hey, I'm going to work and make money, yaaaaay," you rasped.
"They lied to us."
A sigh, "They really did."
"You still have bedhead."
"...That wasn't very supportive."
"It wasn't meant to be."
You laughed quietly as you fully turned to face him, hands coming up to cradle his face and squish his cheeks for the teasing.
"So rude, and this early in the morning."
He huffed out a life as his face was being stretched out, "I like it."
Your eyebrows knitted, "My bedhead?"
"You,” he admitted without a beat.
Heat rose to your cheeks.
It still happened.
After all these years, Phainon still had that effect on you.
You leaned your head back a little to get a better view of him.
He looked unfairly beautiful while being half-awake.
Soft hair tousled from sleep, eyes softer than the early morning light filtering through the curtains.
He smiled.
Not the dazzling smile everyone else knew.
Just the small one reserved for you.
"I used to wonder if we'd always stay friends," he admitted.
The confession surprised you.
"You did?”
"I did."
He looked thoughtful as his next words spilled out.
"We spent every day together. Walking to school, sharing lunches, studying, sleepovers, watching terrible movies."
A smile grew on your face, "And you stealing my fries,” you quipped.
"I was trying to prevent food waste."
"You were committing theft!"
"A noble cause, don't you think so?"
You rolled your eyes.
He continued anyway, "There were times I almost told you."
Your heart skipped.
"...Back then?"
"I think the first time was when we were sixteen."
You blinked.
"Sixteen?"
"You fell asleep during the movie."
"...Which one?”
"The one where you woke up and you apologized for drooling on my shoulder."
Your eyes shut in embarrassment, "Oh my god, why would you remember that of all things."
"I remember thinking that..."
He paused, his voice straying lower, as if he were afraid to even consider the possibility, "...if I said something and ruined this..."
His fingers intertwined with yours, fingers tightening.
"...I'd lose my favorite person."
The room fell quiet, the hum of the air conditioning filling the silence.
You stared at your joined hands in the dim lighting.
"I almost confessed too."
His eyebrows lifted.
"When?"
"The festival."
"The summer one?"
You nod, "You won me that giant samoyed stuff toy."
"You practically begged me for it,” his chest rumbled as he laughed softly at the memory.
"I just admired it."
"You threatened to cry."
A shrug, "You told me I was persuasive."
"You absolutely weaponized your puppy eyes."
Your eyes flitted back to his, "I learned from the best."
You laughed again before your voice softened.
"I remember thinking..."
You looked down.
"... that if you didn't like me back..."
A breath.
"I'd be content to just be your friend for as long as you'd have me."
Neither of you spoke.
Years of almosts.
Almost saying something.
Almost reaching across that invisible line.
Almost changing everything.
Until one ordinary day, he decided to take matters into his own hands and tell you the words you've both been pining to hear and say to one another.
And suddenly every almost became finally.
Phainon's thumb brushed over your knuckles.
"We wasted a lot of time."
"We were just scared."
"Were you?"
"Terrified."
"I couldn't tell."
"I practiced confessing to my mirror."
His eyes widened.
"No way."
You nodded lazily, "For two weeks."
"You rehearsed?"
"I had cue cards and everything."
He laughed so hard the bed shook beneath both of you, "You had cue cards?"
"They were color-coded."
"I wish I'd seen them."
"Dream on, then, I burned them.”
"You burned evidence?” his voice cracked slightly from giggling.
"I panicked, okay?."
"You absolutely panicked."
You sigh and close your eyes, resigning to defeat, "I absolutely panicked."
His laughter slowly faded into another smile.
A quieter one.
"I'm glad."
Your head tilted, "About...?"
"That we were idiots."
You frowned, "That's such a strange thing to be glad about, Phai."
"If we'd confessed sooner..."
He brushed a strand of hair behind your ear, "...maybe we'd have been different people."
You thought about it.
Maybe.
Maybe not.
The teenagers who'd been afraid of losing each other couldn't have imagined this.
Sharing rent and decorating the apartment.
Fighting over blankets and ending up on the floor laughing because it had turned into a tickle fight.
Arguing over whose turn it was to pay for groceries because Phainon wouldn't let you pay for anything.
Making coffee together every morning just the way he likes it because no other coffee shop gets it quite as good as you do.
Knowing every scar.
Every bad habit.
Every sleepy mumble.
Loving each other wasn't fireworks anymore.
It was this… soft, steady, and certain thing you've come to know.
This familiarity—this always, you come home to.
Your alarm buzzed again.
You groaned dramatically.
"No."
"You should just turn it off."
"No."
"You'll be late, then."
"I've decided employment isn't for me."
"Oh?"
"I'll become a house cat."
He smiled, "I think you'd be very convincing."
"I already nap as much as I can throughout the day."
"Closer to ten hours, sweetheart."
"You're already sabotaging my newfound career."
He laughed quietly, “What about my flights today, then, hm?
You snuck closer, fully in his arms this time, wrapping your own around his neck.
He instinctively pulled you closer until there wasn't even a breath of space between you.
You rested your forehead against his.
"...Can't you just stay here and kiss me forever?"
He didn't answer immediately.
He kissed you, instead.
Slowly and reverently.
The kind of kiss that still felt new despite all the mornings you'd shared.
When he finally pulled away, your noses were still touching.
"I can."
The corner of your eyes crinkled, amused.
"Really?"
"Mhm."
He kissed the corner of your mouth.
Then the other.
And finally a kiss on the tip of your nose.
"Until we're both fired."
You gasped.
"I knew you were secretly reckless."
"I'm not."
"No?"
A kiss.
"I'm choosing you before my plane."
You gasp dramatically.
"You flirt."
"So I've been told."
"You've gotten better."
"I've had years of practice."
Then another.
This one made you smile against his lips.
And another.
And again.
Until, eventually, you sighed.
"...We really do have to go get ready."
"We do."
And still, neither of you moved.
Not for another minute.
Not even for ten.
After all, it was barely five and the world would still be waiting outside your apartment.
But mornings like these—the ones filled with sleepy laughter, old memories, and kisses stolen from the clock—were the kind of ordinary moments you'd once been too afraid to dream about.
You press your face into Phainon's neck and breathe him in.
You live them now.

PHAINON — living with a person who has OCD • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder — Checking OCD: checking things multiple times to prevent perceived harm, disasters, or mistakes.
Phainon stood in the doorway, smiling softly as always. He watched as you stressed over everything, closing every door, locking all windows, checking if the oven and microwave was off and if the fridge was closed. Just as you were setting the shoes aside in case you or Phainon tripped when you got home, a hand caressed your head. Looking up, your husband was still smiling, calm as ever.
"Everything is alright, trust me. You've checked three times,"
You shook your head, muttering about how you're checking for the last time. Phainon let out a small, amused sigh as he knelt down beside you, setting a pair of your clean shoes to where his were already tucked neatly in the shoe box.
"You've done all of the rooms. You don't need to worry,"
It was a small lie. Throughout your stressed panic, you missed the bathroom, one of the most essential things of the house.
But Phainon knew better than to feed into your OCD. If he did point out the missed bathroom, he'd temporarily quiet your anxiety, but it would just make it worse. So he kept quiet.
"All done now?"
Staring at the shoes, you hesitantly nod. Phainon stood up and gave you your jacket, holding the shoulders as you put your arms in the sleeves, thanking him for being a gentleman.
Amidst all of that, you didn't even notice your keys on the counter beside the door. Phainon quietly took the keys and slipped them in your back pocket.
