Doing an ATLA rewatch and I realized that Iâm just. Really fond of Jet. Like yeah heâs terrible he did do all that but really heâs a radicalized kid trying to protect people and fight against oppression.

I didn't hate NATLA as much as most people, but one thing I am really sad about is the handling of Jet's storyline. He would never shrug his shoulders at refugees starving, the whole reason he recruits Zuko is to 'liberate some food' for everyone, not just himself. I also feel like his hatred for the fire nation wasn't given any context - his story and flashbacks are some of the darkest in the og series. He represents the people who can't forgive, the people whose sense of identity is intrinsically tied to the war.

Something I noticed about Jet/Zuko's interactions and arcs in NATLA (Which I won't label as positive or negative. If you like it, you like it. If you don't, you don't. It's just something I've been thinking about.)
The first time I watched the ferry episode, I audibly said, "Hey, what the fuck?" About Jet's behavior, because it was so obviously different. But the more I thought about it, I started thinking the same about Zuko's.
Then something clicked. Their dynamic is almost entirely flip-flopped.
In the original, it is Zuko who wants to steal from the captain for self-serving purposes. He thinks it's unfair that they have better food, but for entirely selfish reasons. He wants the better food because he's royatly; he's above eating pig slop. There's a sense of entitlement driving him. Jet also sees it as unfair, but in the way that the people are being treated as lesser. The refugees, as a community, deserve dignified meals.
In NATLA, this is turned on its head. Zuko is now the one stealing to help someone: his Uncle, and then by proxy, the others on the ferry (Which sets up his Blue Spirit Robin Hood-esque shenanigans later on). And it is now Jet who is doing it for entirely self-serving reasons.
Their stories follow a similar trajectory. Instead of Jet sneaking around Ba Sing and getting into trouble, it is now Zuko doing so. Instead of Zuko feeling jaded and angry and sort of just slogging through City life, that is now Jet. It is Jet who has to discover a sense of hope within his new life, and in turn, it is now Zuko who feels the need to protect the Fire Nation refugees from Jet, and not the other way around.
Just something I noticed.
Zuko finding out that he and Katara had the same ex-situationship because of the ember island play will never not be funny to me
