i mean the real answer is that it’s fiction and that’s how i wanted it to happen.

is it realistic? probably not. but i didn’t want to do a scene where someone misgenders fletcher and they correct them. especially if it launches into gender 101 bc fletcher doesn’t have the patience. i just wanted to do a story where it was understood that they use they/them and everyone just gets it right. i do intend for fletcher to be completely androgynous, so really if anyone does try to he/she them, it’s kind of a toss up anyway.

this does kind of come up in a new chapter i have for the novelization, where buck tries to appeal to fletcher's queer solidarity. it was originally for the transmasc buck au (that i very seriously considered making canon 5 years and 3 drafts in but ultimately decided against), where buck was like," you know, I'm trans, and you're..." (leaves a spot for fletcher to fill in. they do not.) "...not cis?" "correct."

instead i had to go with "you know, I'm gay, and you're... queer?" and in this version it kind of has to be implied that they're Visibly Queer, because it's not discussed before this. if anything fletcher comes off as kind of homophobic in a previous chapter when they were trying to get a rise out of buck. but then earlier in the same chapter they sucker punch de luca for calling buck a pansy. so buck is kind of testing the waters i guess. we could assume that he sees a very androgynous person and hears everyone else calling them "they" and draws his own conclusions.

i have thought about what fletcher’s first day orientation is, and them having a slide in their power point that’s like

and everyone’s just like. yeah i believe that.
