ok but the hunger games literally did mention it All like… the use of propaganda by the elite as an attempt to divide the minority groups they oppress by making them perceive each other as rivals and prevent them from recognizing and uniting against their real enemy? check. criticism of the way we consume media with no consideration for other people’s privacy like we’re entitled to every detail of their lives and a lack of empathy for their pain because it makes good entertainment? yeah. realistic depictions and explorations of the effects of trauma, particularly that caused by conflict? hunger games has you covered. acknowledgement of the existence of and links between racism and classism, and that conventional standards of beauty are influenced by the societal elite, which people are encouraged to harm themselves in order to conform to (the fact that the weathier people in district 12 are white, blonde and blue-eyed while the coal miner families are mostly people of color; that the two poorest districts, 11 and 12, have majority poc populations; that most people, katniss herself included, consider prim to be prettier than katniss partly because she looks like her white, blonde, blue-eyed mother, who was from the wealthier part of the district; that the first thing that happens to the tributes when they’re taken to the capitol is they they’re “prepped” to conform to capitol beauty standards before they even meet their stylists in ways that literally violate their bodies permanently, and that many of the capitol residents have extreme body modifying surgery that can take a severe toll on their health and wellbeing in the long term)? none of this is accidental, and is both brought up and criticised multiple times throughout the trilogy. the sexualization of minors for adult consumption, especially young celebrities? the fact that politicians in positions of power and authority gain those positions through corruption and by considering anyone harmed in their acension collateral damage? the significance of propaganda and social influence in modern warfare? the misery caused by poverty, which is caused and intentionally maintained by the wealthy elite? the brutal and violating experience of living in a surveillance police state, especially as a member of a minority group and/or poor person? the inherently immoral and corruptive nature of warfare and the military and the unimaginable atrocities and suffering it leads to for ordinary civilians? every YA dystopia novelist tried so hard to be mrs collins but most didn’t even understand half of what went into her books that made them so compelling.

yeah “gifted kids” had it rough but please no more sob story posts abt that bc i PROMISE that the kids labelled “dumb” by the system and shoved to the side n not given half the attention that ur gifted ass was got the short end of the stick. its so much more tragic to think of all the wasted potential of children who maybe were too loud or rowdy or didnt test well than “gifted kid burnout uwu”. like yeah it fucking sucks! i was a “gifted kid” too and it fucked up my self esteem for a long time but i was given opportunities and attention in school, something not afforded to other students for arbitrary reasons. the american school system just fucking sucks but i promise u as a star student who got stressed u did not get the worst of it

…i had to see another 20k post abt how gifted kids r the real sufferers so heres more Opinions. im not gonna go in depth abt the rosenthal experiment (in which kids were randomly labelled in the top 20% of iq scores, and then went on to perform better on their end-of-yr iq reports in part due to the special treatment they got) bc there are studies trying to replicate it that failed, but u still cannot deny that gifted kids are given special resources and attention. like, i was pushed really far and for a while i did develop an anxiety disorder probably mostly bc of the expectations placed on me, but i was also given a lot of favoritism and opportunities throughout my school career just bcos of my “gifted” status. there are kids i talked to (including my current gf!) who have JUST as much intellectual potential but don’t have my “gifted” status or who learned differently who were not given opportunities and who were not given the resources i was!!! can we PLEASE shift the conversation from gifted kids who get performance anxiety to all the wasted potential of kids who were labelled stupid - kids who develop inferiority complexes and depression and are ridiculed by teachers n peers! kids who have earned this label by errant behavior often caused by autism or adhd or other mental illnesses and young girls n poc who are more likely to have their potential ignored n be shoved to the side. again, the american school system fails most of us. gifted kids do not get the worst of it. PLEASE rb this.

ok this is worded more aggressively than necessary. all in all i truly do sympathize with gifted kid burnout having experienced that trouble myself but what i’m really trying to say is that we shouldn’t ignore those more negatively affected than us. i’m fine with personal gifted kid rants it just aggravates me when those are the only critiques of the school system i see, especially when most of them are very victim-y and make it seem like they experienced the worst that the school system has to offer.

This is not how I wanted to find out I’m a Dark Millennial. I hate this post.
