strangely   amos   found   himself   in   a   better   mood.   at   least,   he   found   himself   settling   in   and   already   comfortable   enough   with   the   gathered   crowd   at   the   festival   to   be   a   bit   more   present   amongst   them.   with   cotton   candy   tinting   his   lips   with   a   lingering   shade   of   pink,   a   piece   of   it's   fluff   still   stuck   to   the   stubble   over   his   upper   lip,   he   found   himself   settling   into   line   for   the   tea   cups   with   a   rare,   relaxed   smile. despite   how   loud   and   busy   it   seemed   this   place   wasn't   so   bad. he   could   get   used   to   pinehaven. he   could   do   this. whatever   confidence   he   had   in   that   moment,   if   you   could   even   call   it   that,   abandoned   ship   the   second   he   got   to   the   front   of   the   line   and   was   stopped   when   explained   he   was   riding   alone.   “i   recognize   you   think   it's   more   fun   with   someone   else   but   i-   i   ain't   got   anyone   else.   i   don't   know   anyone,”   he   tried   to   politely   explain   that   he   was   new   in   town   and   didn't   have   anyone   to   ask   to   ride   with   him--   and   even   if   he   did   know   someone,   he   should   have   still   been   able   to   ride   alone,   but   they   insisted.   he   needed   someone   to   ride   with   him.   it   wouldn't   be   as   fun   if   he   didn't.

“alright,   alright.   if   you   can   find   me   someone,”   amos   started   to   give   in   only   to   dip   his   head   forward   and   hide   behind   the   brim   of   his   stetson   as   the   attendant   yelled   out   that   they   had   a   single   rider   looking   for   a   partner.   “you   didn't   have   to   go   and   do   all   that…” this   was   why   he   preferred   keeping   to   himself. thankfully   someone   was   kind   enough   to   put   him   quickly   out   of   his   misery   and   stepped   up   to   join   him.   “i--”   the   rest   of   his   words   reduced   to   a   huff   as   he   pursed   his   lips   and   looked   up   at   them   with   furrowed,   uncomfortable   brows   as   the   attendant   told   them   they   were   good   to   climb   into   their   teacup;   and   to   have   fun.   “you   didn't   have   to   do   that,”   he   mumbled   the   offering   to   the   person   walking   with   him,   not   the   attendant.   “but   thank   ya.”

a wide, teeth baring smile instantly took over his face as she confirmed his suspicion. he chuckled softly, the sound deep and resonant in the quiet after rush of the cafe. "exactly! a total physical earworm. that's the perfect description for it," he agreed, his head bobbing in unison with the ambient melody still floating through the room. "it's like your brain gets hijacked by a rhythm and you're just along for the ride until your limbs cooperate." her doubt of his absolute lack of coordination prompted an amused snort, he adjusted his position so he was leaning sideways against the wooden partition. "oh, trust me, it’s a disaster zone over here. my teammate says watching me move rhythmically is like witnessing a folding chair try to become sentient. there's just too many moving parts." he grinned down at her, waving off her modesty with a flick of his wrist. "hey, training counts! don't sell yourself short, that was crisp."

he mimed zipping his lips tightly and tossing the imaginary key over his shoulder into the espresso machine. "your secret is completely safe. absolute lockdown. i'm basically an vault when it comes to unauthorized breaks," he promised, his eyes tracking her hand toward the bakery display. the mention of food immediately shifted his focus, gaze locking onto the options with intense, child like concentration. "cinnamon swirl, without a doubt." then came the real wager. his head snapped back up, eyebrows jumping up toward his hairline as she offered a complimentary beverage in exchange for his participation.

a challenge, and a free drink? it was an impossible offer to refuse. "deal. zero hesitation," he said, already stepping around the edge of the counter to join her side of the floor, his massive frame suddenly making the workspace look incredibly small. he began shaking out his wrists and bouncing lightly on the balls of his feet, taking his role as a student entirely too seriously. "alright, coach. show me the steps. from the top. if i accidentally take out a blender, that's on me."

                yasmin   ,   somewhat   imperceptibly   ,   breathed   a   sigh   of   relief   .   finally   ,   someone   with   some   sense   in   this   town   !   “   god   ,   am   i   glad   you're   seeing   this   too   ,   ”   she   said   ,   a   knowing   smile   sent   minerva's   way   .   she   might   not   have   known   her   name   ,   but   it   was   clear   that   they   were   kindred   spirits   .   everything   she   was   thinking   had   been   repeated   back   to   her   as   if   she'd   said   it   all   aloud   .“   i   have   half   a   mind   to   take   my   phone   out   and   record   this   showing   for   posterity   ,   but   i   would   hate   for   anyone   to   know   that   i   had   attended   this   farce   willingly   .   ”

                it   was   one   thing   to   have   to   attend   a   show   in   manhattan   out   of   respect   ,   and   because   she   was   expected   to   be   there   (   and   she   never   missed   an   opportunity   for   the   paparazzi   to   snap   photos   of   her   in   full   glam   )   ,   but   it   was   another   entirely   to   personally   seat   yourself   at   something   so   horridly   mundane   .   “   if   nothing   else   ,   it   has   proven   to   be   entertaining   .   i   find   it   fun   to   speculate   at   what   must   have   gone   on   behind   the   scenes   to   produce   .   .   .   this   .   some   drama   ,   maybe   ?   a   replaced   director   at   the   last   minute   ?   what   i'd   give   to   be   a   fly   on   the   wall   during   rehearsal   ,   if   such   a   thing   even   took   place   .   ”

sporting his usual garb, an oversized hoodie that had seen better days and a backwards baseball cap, jay's tall frame practically filled the doorway. arriving at the perfect moment to catch the final second of her choreography before she aborted mission. his eyes were wide, blinking in slow, processing wonder, before his entire face split into a brilliant grin. "wait, wait, wait," jay said, abandoning his path to the register and instantly leaning his forearms against the counter with a relaxed grace. he pointed a finger at her, his eyes shining with pure excitement. "was that the one where you do the little hand twist thing and then the hip drop? the one with the song that goes like..."

he tried to hum a bar of the track currently blaring, but it came out as a completely tuneless, rhythmic buzzing. he shook his head, totally unbothered by his lack of musical ability, and let out a bright, booming laugh. "don't hide the phone! man, i’ve been trying to learn that exact transition for three days because jazz said i have fridge logic when i dance. like, i only make sense when i’m standing still." he sighed, a look of profound, tragic defeat crossing his features for a split second before the grin bounced right back.

"i keep hitting my own elbow against my ribs. it’s a hazard. you looked like a total pro." he leaned in a little closer, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial, airy whisper, completely ignoring the fact that he was supposed to be ordering a drink. "are you on take two? because if you need a hype man in the background just doing a supportive nod, or if you need me to hold the camera so it has that cinematic shake...i’m your guy. i won't even charge you a scouting fee. just, you know, maybe a muffin if you guys have any left from the rush."

elodie, only a few minutes ago, had come back from her lunch break after the rush. she had been tying her apron around her waist when she heard the pitter patter of footsteps behind the coffee bar & music that wasn't coming from the speakers. curiously, she investigated.

when she peered around the corner of the break room, she caught sight of iniya on her phone, trying to replicate the choreography internet's newest fixation. elodie couldn't help but let out a snicker at the situation. " iniya ? " she called out, wearing an amused grin. " sorry, I really didn't want to interrupt. " elodie stepped out toward the bar. " I can film if you want -- " she said, gesturing toward the other's phone. " I mean it's slow anyways, and I feel like you were getting the hang of it ! " her tone was part teasing, but predominantly genuine.
