it’s genuinely so cool to find a blog that is obsessed with the books i was growing up!
I found the first book in my local library as a kid and loved it ever since. I genuinely thought no one else knew this book even exist! anyways, thank you for being awesome and having amazing tastes in books! :)
OH ACTUALLY I HAVE A QUESTION: any book recommendations? especially those similar to archvillain?
hi!!! your message made me so happy! i found the book in the exact same way, at the library when i was fourteen! i made this blog when i finished it, and well, ten years later, here i still am! it’s been a huge influence on my writing and it’s always going to be very close to my heart. hit me up if you ever want to talk about the series– i have a lot of thoughts and i’d love to hear yours!
in terms of books similar to archvillain, depends on what part of it you like! if you’re a fan of it being middle grade and superhero, I’d recommend the ordinary boy and n.e.r.d.s. series! ordinary boy is about the one non-powered person in a town full of heroes and villains. mostly lighthearted comedy but it has a really well-done time travel plot. also in the last book the villain is just communism which is definitely a choice for a book about fifth graders. n.e.r.d.s. is just a strong series all-around about nerdy kids who use their most bullyable traits as their superpowers. this was the book that introduced me to multiverse theory! if you go far back enough on this blog you’ll find some n.e.r.d.s./archvillain crossover stuff (i’m sure @samsonet3 remembers).
if you liked archvillain for the supervillain protagonist, you might like the please don’t tell my parents i’m a supervillain series or the renegade x series! please don’t tell my parents i’m a supervillain has a similar concept– three high schoolers moonlight as supervillains under the noses of their hero parents. the main character is also an inventor type, although they’re in a world full of heroes, villains, and steampunk aliens, if I remember correctly. i liked the first book, ehh on the second one, and i’m not sure where the series went past that. the renegade x series is about a half villain, half hero teenager going to live with his estranged hero dad’s family, and feeling caught between both sides. the protagonist reminds me of an older kyle a bit, although damien mostly causes problems on purpose. this series is targeted at older teens so the content is darker and sex is more of a focus. i liked the first book the most.
honorable mentions to the “archvillain-lites”—barry lyga’s stories i never told article where he goes into what the plans for other archvillain books would have been, the section in his recent book unedited where kyle cameos, the archvillain fanfics I wrote over the years, and (extremely self-indulgently) the archvillain inspired original supervillain story I’ve written/am writing (a teenage wannabe supervillain gets adopted as the apprentice to an evil ceo that’s one of the great supervillain powers of the world). the first two are very fun dubiously canon additions to the world of archvillain from the author, the last two are my own stuff! Check at least the first two out!
