(in my delulu version of the show i keep in my head) house is almost straightforward in his way. House is very very smart and he’s also mentally ill and closeted and an addict and he hates the insincerity of the world. The professional code, littles lies and big ones, falseness. Fake smiles, nobody cares. I think every time he’s at a monster truck rally and hears some jingoistic OUR TROOPS ARE HEROES stuff, he thinks about his father.

And because of who he is (very smart and angry and an asshole) he mirrors the lies back. When he says his offensive bullshit he’s a kid in a funhouse pulling faces at a reflection. And the cruelty feels good, too, can’t forget that. Being an asshole with no consequences? Saying whatever shit you want, hurting people and they still line up to work with you? That’s how you know you’re really worth it. That you really do have control. (He doesn’t.) And hell it’s been decades and his leg hurts all the time and nobody hears the cries for help, might as well have a little fun with it. It’s a grim little game.
