Notes from “The Animator’s Survival Kit” book.

[Pg.259 - 265]  This is the end of my book studies. I’m pretty proud to have gotten through it and do a handful of the exercises. But this is only step one, I’m moving onto more advance animation techniques and will be posting those as I complete them. At the moment I’m currently wrestling with Toon Boom, so we’ll see how that goes.

a GIRL was the LEADER of something that wasn’t some fashion thing or school clique or small group of bitchy school girls, she was the equivalent of a monarch or government official

and wasn’t written as “bossy”, she was a female character with DEPTH and layered emotions, not just characterized as “girl”

she didn’t have an overly feminine name to over exaggerate “LOOK IT GIRL LEADER” her name is BLUEstar/bluefur

NO ONE ever questioned her ability to be leader because she was a girl, every single time in media, especially kids’ media, whenever a girl becomes in charge or something or becomes leaderly or is the best at something that isn’t like cooking or fashion or singing some character always says “but she’s a GIRL” and it’s incredibly on the nose that it’s all done for “girl power” and show the writers are WOKE

you could say that that’s what happened with her having to give up her kits, but in all honesty, her having kits entirely was stopping her from becoming leader, the timing was just really bad, if she had had kits when she was already deputy she would’ve still been deputy or gone back to being deputy, if she had kits before and they were apprentices or warriors by the time sunstar needed to name a new deputy she would’ve been named deputy

no one ever thought she couldn’t be deputy or leader specifically because of her gender

no one ever thought she COULDN’T be deputy or leader in general

and then when her mental health started really deteriorating

you know what that would usually be framed as in almost every other piece of media?

female hysteria

but instead it was taken entirely seriously and was never framed as being bluestar’s fault, everything around her had been torn apart ever since she was barely an apprentice and that would wear down anyone’s mental stability and health

did she make mistakes? yes.

but they made it very clear that it wasn’t because “hehe female leader can’t be good leader, women crazy”

basically,

Which is like? Firstly, not a surprise that something steeped in alter-ego resonates for queer people, especially trans people.

And secondly, also super not surprising that it’s a community that is massively oversexualized and denigrated as sexually deviant. Like, js it’s a tale as old as time to target an overlapping interest group as a guise to target a minority demographic. 

And targeting sexual shaming at queer-dense populations, hah! HAH, I’m not surprised.
