It was a long shift. Damn you were tired. It was dark of course. You drove along a long stretch of road in the countryside to get home. The only car you ended up seeing was some dickhead in a pickup truck who wouldn’t turn off his brights. You’d flash him yours but you were too tired to be angry for more than two seconds. You blinked slowly but shook your head watching as carefully as you could. Your coworker had told you to look out for deer. They had a tendency to jump out and freeze at the sight of headlights. It was a defense mechanism. Meant to help them blend in with the tall grass. But in the middle of the road with a car speeding towards you was not the best use for it. You of course struggled to stay awake. It wasn’t a super long drive though. You just needed to hang on for a little while longer. But against your best efforts you felt your eyes start to fall. You quickly shook yourself back awake and in the middle of the road you saw it. It was a deer? No it was a man… no… what was it?!? You slammed your brakes but the thing (whatever it was) saw the headlights and froze as it stared at you head on. You felt your entire body and everything in your vehicle fling forward as you slammed into the creature on the road. In the stillness afterwards you realized what had happened. Your neck felt sore which was worrying but not as worrying as the possibility you just hit a person. You sat there to gather your bearings for a minute and then you unbuckled and stepped out. Lying in the middle of the road there it was. Oh no! You thought. That’s a man! But as you stepped closer this man’s features looked far more creature-like. He was large. Tall seemingly but taller than any human you’d ever seen. He was covered in red. A red suit and red hair that formed ears at the top. In between was a pair of small antlers which you were certain were much larger earlier. On his face plastered a smile and his eyes closed. He was either dead or out cold. Suddenly he stirred. You heard a groan but it sounded strange. Almost like it was coming through a speaker. He sat up abruptly. So abruptly it was like he hadn’t taken any damage and it actually scared the shit out of you. You let out a startled scream and the creature turned and looked at you, his smile and eyes widening. You immediately ran to your car. You jumped in the drivers seat and slammed the door behind you. You fumbled with the keys and struggled get the engine to start for just a second. Then when you looked up ready to drive away as fast as you could you saw he was gone. Or so you thought until you heard a strange loudspeaker voice come from right next to you.

“Thank you for the ride!” He was now in the passenger seat. He was so big he barely fit in your tiny car. He buckled himself up and you immediately went for the door but a shadow like tentacle appeared and closed it just as soon as you opened it. You felt cold moist tentacles wrap around your body, trapping you in your seat. “Please…. don’t hurt me!” You begged. “Honestly I could just have you for a midnight snack and take your vehicle but alas I’m not exactly a very skilled driver. I’m able to teleport in hell but not here. I’m fond of a pleasant stroll here and there but I must admit time is of the essence” you could barely understand what he was talking but you heard two things. 1. There was a threat of being eaten. And 2. He mentioned he was from hell. “Are you… some kind of demon?” You asked. “Ah you’re smarter than I initially assumed. Good for you” he said the last part in a very condescending tone. “So… where-where do you wanna go?” You wondered what a demon from hell would be doing here in the human world. “Not far. Louisiana” he replied nonchalantly. “Louisiana?!?” You exclaimed. “Did I stutter?” He responded. “That’s a whole other state?!?” You figured that would be about a three day drive. “I know. Which is why I’m eternally grateful you were able to offer me a ride. I would never make it in time at the pace I was going” he said. “Never make it in time for what?” You asked, almost afraid of the answer. “Why, Mardi Gras of course! It’s almost over” he explained. He wanted to go to Mardi Gras? You had never been but it always sounded like fun. Unfortunately due to the current circumstances you were not interested in sticking around unless he forced you. You had obligations and responsibilities. You had people who would worry about you. You honestly didn’t wanna go on this trip at all but right now survival was what was most important. You had some demon holding you hostage because he wanted to go party and have a good time and he was threatening to eat you if you didn’t comply. “Ok… but I will need to stop for gas occasionally” you told him. “I believe we can still make it there on time in spite of that” he said. You started your drive.

The demon you learned was named Alastor was picky about music and when music wasn’t playing he was talking your ear off. He seemed excited to be visiting what you had found out to be his original hometown. Apparently he used to be human. It suddenly made sense why he was interested in Mardi Gras and Louisiana. “Tell me, have you been before?” He asked. “No but I’ve always wanted to go” you suddenly regretted admitting that. “Well I’m sure we’ll have a wonderful time together. If it’s anything like I remember, you’re in for a treat” shit! Now he wanted you to come. You weren’t sure what to say. “Well I…wish I could stay but I think this is just gonna be a drop off. I have a job to get back to” you said nervously. “Nonsense! If you don’t go now you’ll likely never go! Take it from me. You don’t want to have any regrets in life” he said. “You have regrets?” You asked. “Only that I was caught” he answered ominously. “What does that mean?” You questioned. “Oh nothing. Just relax! We’ll be there soon and you can head home and remember this as the most interesting thing that ever happened to you” interesting was one word for it. Although you sighed in relief. It sounded like he wasn’t going to make you attend the festival with him. Dawn was approaching and you realized you had to be in for work soon. “I have to call in work and make an excuse. If you don’t mind” you pulled out your phone and dialed your boss. She answered and you put on your acting skills. “Hey… I can’t come in today. I’m really sorry but I’m having a family emergency and I need to handle it immediately. I expect to be back in a week or less though” you were lucky enough that you didn’t call in very often. “Oh I understand. Take all the time you need. I’ll cover your shift today and until we can get someone else” you hung up and Alastor gave you an odd look. “What?” You asked. “You handled that quite well” he sounded almost impressed. “It’s all about how much information you give them. If they don’t ask, you don’t need to over explain. Anyway, I'm not an evil mastermind just cause I know how to get out of work. It’s a common practice. It also helps that I’m a reliable worker. They trust me” you felt a bit bad. But it wasn’t like you were doing this for selfish reasons. Your life was literally on the line. And it wasn’t like you could tell anyone the truth. “You need to learn to take more risks. Life is boring if you simply sit there and do what you’re told” he said. “The problem with living like you’re suggesting is you never know when your time is going to be up. Playing with fire always ends up getting you burned” you responded. “Ah but the heat is so intense that it feels like you are truly living. A short life worthwhile is infinitely better than a mediocre long one. The latter is just prolonged misery”

You didn’t try anything at the gas stations. You figured it wasn’t worth it. Although the irony would be kinda funny. He literally encouraged his hostage to take more risks and then allowed them roam free for a bit. But you also didn’t wanna say goodbye to your car. You figured there was no reason to worry or try to escape. You had cleared any work obligations and as far as you knew he planned to let you go once you took him where he wanted. You certainly hoped so. You still had that thought at the back of your mind that what if he was simply playing with his food and once you reached your destination he would eat you. Another day came and gone and you were getting closer to Louisiana. Unfortunately the traffic decided to slow your efforts. “Damn it!” You cursed and laid your hand on the horn. You turned to him. “Sooo… you wouldn’t hold against me if… we were too late-due to circumstances beyond my control of course!” You quickly added. “Well I’d hate to consider this a wasted trip. At the very least I haven’t had human flesh in quite some time. So though I wouldn’t necessarily blame you, you might become a… necessary casualty” he grinned at the horror in your eyes. You almost forgot this was a fucking evil demon. You’d been having such decent conversation and he could be so well mannered. You quickly pulled up your phone and opened Google Maps. “What on earth are you doing?” He asked with a little annoyance in his voice. “I’m looking for an alternate route” you answered. “Please! As if that infernal contraption could ever-”

“-found one!” You exclaimed. “How?!?” He sounded like you just performed a miracle but he didn’t sound happy about it. “I just need to get to this roundabout, dial back a bit, and make it past this intersection. Normally this route would actually be longer but due to this traffic it’s our quickest option” you followed the directions and before you knew it you were back on schedule. You’d be a little later than he probably would’ve wanted but he’ll still get to enjoy the festivities. He was quiet and a bit grumpy for the rest of the ride. You liked the quiet but the grumpy made you nervous. You tried to get him excited about Mardi Gras again. “What’s the thing you’re looking forward to the most when you get there?” You asked and he seemed to perk up a bit at this question. “Oh, the food! It’s absolutely divine! And I’m particularly curious to see how the French Quarter looks now! It was the place to be back in my day. I wonder if any of the buildings are still there?” he said. “It must’ve been amazing back then! What was it like in that time?” You asked and then became trapped in his enthusiastic rave about all the fine things they had in the 20s. It wasn’t exactly boring so you were able to listen but he talked for almost 2 hours and it started to wear you down a bit. He sure loved an audience. You were grateful though that you were able to cheer him up.

Finally you arrived at your location. It was bustling and there was no way your car could make it through the streets. It didn’t matter though. You had taken him where he wanted to go. You managed to find a place to park. He stepped out of the vehicle excitedly. He was like a giddy child. You stepped out too. Planning to wish him a pleasant goodbye. “So how… how are you going to blend in?” You asked. And Alastor chuckled. He summoned one of the masks you could see people wearing. “You think that’ll be enough?” You asked. “Aw you’re worried about me! Don’t fret. Most people will assume I’m wearing an elaborate costume. Anyway I suppose this is where we part ways” he said and offered his hand. “I suppose it is” you took his hand and shook it. You were a bit nervous about shaking the hand of a demon but nothing seemed to happen so you shook it off and proceeded to your vehicle. “You know the offer still stands” he said. “What offer?” You stopped on your way to your car. “The one where you can stay and enjoy the fun with me. Finally achieve that dream of attending this magical event” he gestured around him. “I’m flattered you enjoyed my company so much but I have to decline. I hope you have a good time” you replied. “Very well” he didn’t push. You got in your car. And gave the keys a turn. You heard the engine give it a real college try but sputter and stop. “No, no, no. Come on!” You tried your damned best to get your car to start. You looked out the window to see people having fun and Alastor making his way towards the crowd. You climbed out. “Alastor! Wait!” You called out. He stopped and turned around. You ran up to him. You stopped to catch your breath but only for a moment. “I think… I wanna see what a life worthwhile feels like” you told him. He smiled almost the most genuine smile you’d ever seen on him. “What about your job?” He asked. “I think I can afford a little extra time. My boss will understand. Family emergency and all” Alastor chuckled and offered you his arm. “Shall we?” You took it. You were already here. Why waste the opportunity…

This isn’t what I usually post about but with it being pride month and me being a library worker and all the censorship going on right now I think it’s important to raise awareness of banned books. Now some people might already know all this but I still meet people all the time who have no idea this is major problem. It’s especially bad when it comes queer/lgbtia books. People will try to get them taken off shelves. Sometimes they even succeed. Books have been taken off shelves in schools and libraries in certain states. Many people will claim it’s to protect kids. But that is the excuse they always use. It’s not about kids. It’s about suppressing all representation as well educational material. It’s about stuffing us out like a smoldering match. Everyone has to a right to read and to read what they want. One person’s beliefs should not give them the power to take away other people’s rights. One of the most banned books is Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe. It’s an autobiography about a nonbinary trans person. It’s a graphic novel and it’s a wonderful read. If you get the chance definitely read it. People out there don’t want you to which is exactly why you should
