what hurts more than learning that oikawa and iwaizumi don't keep in regular contact is iwaizumi's answer about what he'd like to do when they meet up again, because the yearning is so plain and apprarent in just one simple answer.
what do you do when a best friend you grew up with, who was there from your earliest memories, who you spent almost every waking moments with for almost 18 years, become someone you keep tabs on through old group chats and sporadic picture or conversations about training?
how do you explain you never knew you could miss another person so deeply, like a phantom ache in your soul, your whole existence? and there's so much you want to do and share with him, 10 years' worth of time in which you two have matured and grown up, separately.
yet when asked what would you like to do with the your missing half when you meet again, when it comes down to it, what you want most is just the closeness and simplicity of the old days, when there had never been any distance between the two of you. not even to play on the same side of the court again—just the two of them, together, and a volleyball they pass back and forth to each other, like how it all began for them as children. something so simple back then, but so far from reach now.

okay so they don't chat regularly anymore but iwaizumi will still call oikawa's mom "kaa-chan". that's fine. totally fine :DDD
(the normal way to refer to a friend's mother would 'oba-chan,' which would be already quite familiar and casual, but sure, iwachan, go ahead and call oikawa's mother 'kaa-chan' 😭 the rest of us will live)
