Associating the entire religion of Islam with terrorism or oppression is narrow-minded and wrong. For centuries, Muslims around the world have been responsible for scientific discoveries, works of art, and major technological advancements. There is a great deal of diversity in the way Islam is practiced by the 1.6 billion Muslims around the world, it is a vastly complex and diverse religion.Ā Read more

other language learners: I have learned so much about my own languages from language study. I now have a greater understanding of linguistics and the nuances of grammar and sentence structure. language learning is just so good for your brain!
me: learning to type in Russian has made my typing in English far worse than it used to be. I am slowly becoming equally mediocre at both languages. soon I will have forgotten where all the letters are

Loving yourself is not (necessarily):
Thinking youāre gorgeous
Not wanting to change anything about your body, personality, or life
Loving yourself is:
Knowing you have inherent worth regardless of your physical appearance or life circumstance
Knowing you deserve good things
Wanting to take care of yourself because you deserve good things
SWEAR LIKE A QUĆBĆCOIS āÆ1:
If you live in Canada, youāve probably heard this one, itās the most popular Quebec swear outside the province itself. Tabernak is, like most swears in Quebec, a religious reference (from tabernacle)
On its own, tabernak is used, roughly, like fuck or shit. ā Tabernak! ā Quāest quāil sāest passĆ©?? ā Mon ordi a planchĆ©
But it gets better: les sacres tend to be strung along together to make a long rage-filled sentence, like this example from wikipedia: ā Criss de calice de tabarnak d'osti de sacrament!!!
Furthermore, one can use en tabernak to describe two things
Ā Someone is angry : Il est en tabernak! : Heās super pissed
Ā In place of beaucoup : Il a pris la cocaĆÆne en tabernak! : He took a shit-ton of coke Je tāaime en tabernak : I fucking love you

why do black people use you in the wrong context? such is "you ugly" instead of "you're ugly" I know u guys can differentiate, it's a nuisance
you a bitch
Itās called copula deletion, or zero copula. Many languages and dialects, including Ancient Greek and Russian, delete the copula (the verb to be) when the context is obvious.
So an utterance like āyou a bitchā in AAVE is not an example of a misused you, but an example of a sentence that deletes the copular verb (are), which is a perfectly valid thing to do in that dialect, just as deleting an /r/ after a vowel is a perfectly valid thing to do in an upper-class British dialect.
Whatās more, itās been shown that copula deletion occurs in AAVE exactly in those contexts where copulaĀ contractionĀ occurs in so-called āStandard American English.ā That is, the basic sentence āYou are greatā can become āYouāre greatā in SAE and āYou greatā in AAVE, but āI know who you areā cannot become āI know who youāreā in SAE, and according to reports, neither can you get āI know who youā in AAVE.
In other words, AAVE is a set of grammatical rules just as complex and systematic as SAE, and the widespread belief that it is not is nothing more than yet another manifestation of deeply internalized racism.
This is the most intellectual drag Iāve ever read.
You think the anime movieās body-swapping teens have it rough? Its translators are the ones in a real jam.
Iām used to translation difficulties with second and third person pronouns, but hereās an example of the difficulties in translating first person pronouns, from the anime Your Name.
Actually, the characterās dialogue is four distinctly different words in Japanese. However, as shown in a series of photos Japanese Twitter user @notactor surreptitiously snapped at during a screening that he says took place in Beverly Hills, the lines are translated as
āI.ā āI.ā āI.ā āI.ā
So whatās going on? Well, at first, Mitusha (in Takiās body) calls herself watashi, which is indeed the Japanese word for āI.ā However, Japanese has multiple pronoun options for the first-person singular, and as with many things in the Japanese language, the relationship between the speaker and listener is extremely important.
Yes, watashi is the first thing youāll see listed for āIā in an English/Japanese dictionary, and itās also the first pronoun youāll learn in any Japanese class. However, watashi has a very dry, polite nuance to it. In conversations with peers or close friends, Japanese males, just like their counterparts in other societies, tend to use more coarse language to show familiarity and a lack of pretentiousness, so when Takiās friends hear watashi coming out of his mouth during a lunchtime conversation, it takes them completely by surprise, as itās closer to the softer speech usually used by women in Japanese.
Flustered, Mitsuha takes another swing with watakushi, the āIā alternative thatās closest in pronunciation to watashi. However, watakushi is even more baroquely formal than watashi. She gets a little closer on her third try with boku, since thatās definitely a word males use for āIā when talking with their friendsā¦provided theyāre all pre-teens, that is. So while Takiās friends no longer think heās talking like a girl, he now sounds like a little boy.
Finally, Mitsuha gets it just right with ore. While itās too rough for most conversations in the business or academic worlds, ore is indeed the go-to choice for teenaged and adult men when talking with their buddies, as it implies a certain masculine confidence that guys are generally expected to acquire as they mature.
Alas, all of this is more or less impossible to directly translate into English, which is why the subtitling team essentially threw their hands up and just added each Japanese pronoun after āIā in the subtitles. Unfortunately, that means that the only people in the audience whoād appreciate the humor are the ones who donāt need the subtitles in the first place.
Speaking of Japanese pronouns, I learned from a recent episode of @fansplaining that the wordĀ āotakuā for a anime/manga fan comes from a very formal second person pronoun, as fans would supposedly be socially awkward and use the formalĀ āyouā longer than necessary.
Itās way too late for this, but itās important to note that NASA didnāt discover the new earth-like planets. It was a group of astronomers lead by a dude name MichaĆ«lĀ Gillon from the University of LiĆØge in Belgium. Giving NASA credit for this gives the United States credit for something they didnāt do, and we already have a problem with making things about ourselves so. just likeā¦be mindful. Iād be pissed if I discovered a small solar system and credit was wrongfully given to someone else.
