Seriously this is such a good book. Fuck Game of Thrones, this is where it’s at.

Epic Fantasy

All but one of the viewpoint characters are POC. There is only one race on the planet that doesn’t have the epicanthic folds on their eyes, and the author has literally said that the Alethi people are POC.

One character has serious depression, and it’s incredibly well written and not at all insulting. He’s also a badass and a battlefield surgeon and jesus he is amazing.

Interesting, original magic system.

Not a white cishet dudebro fantasy type thing. (Further explanation: While there are pretty rigid gender roles in Alethi society (men and women even eat different food), women aren’t really portrayed as “lesser”. In this society, men don’t even learn to read, they have to stick to Glyphs. Almost all the scholars are women, and the Alethi king’s wife is the one left in charge of managing the kingdom while he’s away at war, and no one ever thinks she’s incapable of it.)

Awesome worldbuilding.

Now, I’ll admit, the ratio of male characters to female characters does leave something to be desired, but the next book in the series, which is comign out in March of 2014, will be focused on a woman.
