This would have lined up well with something that I’ve been thinking for a while, which is that, if the writers were telling the truth about Marinette unifying the two Miraculous’ to become Bugnoire having always been the plan for the final fight with Hawkmoth, then Adrien having a super powered rival could have led to a better setup for that than what we actually got, and they would have had plenty of time to set it up.

Basically, he’d have a super powered rivalry that has been around for at least a couple seasons, though the “superpowered” part could be just one season as long as the rivalry itself has already been around awhile. And they’d have their big final confrontation in part 1 of the finale or the episode before, with Adrien winning. However, Adrien would be too injured or exhausted to continue fighting afterwards, so he sends Plagg off with the Miraculous, knowing that Ladybug currently needs help that he’s not able to give.

That way, Bugnoire can still happen while also giving Adrien his big moment

This was, understandably, deeply traumatic for everyone involved, and ended up temporarily breaking up the Fantastic 4. They did eventually make up, and rebuild their bonds stronger than ever, but the trauma from the incident is something that still weighs on Reed and Sue to this day, for understandable reasons.
