Here are some words and idioms to use to express the meanings of “(to go) crazy/insane” and idk things you might say when in doubt of the mental state of someone? The basic words are: verrückt sein/werden - to be/go crazy wahnsinnig sein/werden - to be/go insane And here are some casual words and phrases: I did my best but it’s not easy to come up with an exact translation or nuance. :) crazy/insane: bekloppt - (lit. like it/so. has been punched?) crazy bescheuert - (lit. like it/so. has been slapped?) crazy and stupid (person); shitty (situation) durch - (lit. through) crazy/weird (like so. has been going through some weird shit in their life and now they’re kinda damaged but not necessarily mentally ill, probably) to not be in one’s right mind / “What the hell? Are you dumb?!”: eine Schraube locker haben - (lit. to have a loose screw) to be weird (nicht) ganz dicht sein - (lit. to (not) be completely tight/leak-proof) Bist du noch ganz dicht?! - (e.g. so. smashing sth. on purpose) Wtf are you doing, are you f-ing crazy?! sie noch alle haben - (lit. to still have them all) (nicht mehr) richtig ticken - (lit. to (not) tick-tock right (anymore)) Hast du sie noch alle?! / Tickst du noch ganz richtig?! Das tat weh! - Wtf are you doing?!/Wtf is wrong with you?! That hurt! nicht stimmen bei jemandem - (to not be correct with so.) Was stimmt eigentlich nicht mit dem??? - What is wrong with that dude??? bei jemandem verkehrt laufen - (lit. to be running wrong with so.) Was läuft denn bei der verkehrt? - Okaay, what is going on with that lady? nicht ganz bei Trost sein (=nicht ganz bei Verstand sein) - (lit. to not be completely at solace/comfort (=mind)) Bist du noch ganz bei Trost?! - Are you f-ing crazy?! a bit less serious: noch alle Tassen im Schrank haben - (lit. to still have all the cups in the cupboard) Die Frau hat doch nicht mehr alle Tassen im Schrank! - She (lit. that woman) is crazy! (“doch” is difficult to translate) nicht (mehr) alle Latten am Zaun haben - (to not have all the battens on the fence (any more)) (I think this has become way more popular than the “Tassen im Schrank” thing) Der Typ hat doch nicht mehr alle Latten am Zaun! - That guy is crazy! bei jemandem piept es (lit. it’s peeping at so.) (maybe a bit childish) Bei dir piept’s wohl! - Are you dumb/crazy?! jemandem brennt der Helm - (lit. someone’s helmet is burning aka their head lol) Geht’s noch?! Ich glaub, dir brennt der Helm! more vulgar: jemand hat den Arsch offen - (lit. so. has their ass open) jemandem hat man doch/wohl ins Hirn geschissen - (lit. they probably/must have shit into someone’s brain) (you might say this when someone of power comes up with a really bad new law for example) to go crazy/wild/insane/lose patience etc.: durchdrehen - (lit. to turn/twist through) abdrehen - (lit. to turn/twist up/off) am Rad drehen - (lit. to turn/twist (on) the weel) Ich dreh hier gleich am Rad! / Ich dreh hier gleich ab/durch! - I’m about to go crazy here! (imagine a retail worker on/before an important holiday) abgehen - (lit. to go off) Der geht immer voll ab, wenn er zu viel trinkt. - He’s always losing it when he drinks too much. einen zu viel kriegen - (lit. to get one too much) (when you’re almost losing it because sth./so. annoys you) die Geduld verlieren - to lose one’s patience einen Föhn kriegen (lit. to get a hair-dryer) Argh! Ich krieg hier gleich ‘nen Föhn! - I’m so close to losing my temper! (imagine someone being really annoyed because they can’t thread a needle because it’s too tiny and argh) jemandem platzt der Arsch - (lit. someone’s ass is bursting) There are probably way more expressions but I only listed the ones I use in my very standard Hochdeutsch :)
