A few months ago I was a 3rd sergeant who was put in charge of a 30 tonne fighting vehicle and handled explosives and live ammuntion. I had the pride and pleasure of leading and getting to know my section of 8 men, whom i cared for and took care of as my own. I attended to their every need, be it financial or with regards to their health or even their mental well being. I was the caretaker of your Singaporean son. I was the defender of our nation.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and I’ll be starting school (without having attended o week btw). Before classes start the public has already assumed that me and my classmates are all “sexual deviants who trivialise rape and don’t seem to know their limits.” Drummed up and sensationalised thanks to our local media, both print and online, that can't even get the cover photo from the right year or institute. I will be part of an institution that can’t seem to find the middle ground between blanket banning everything and issuing a warning to everyone, all while being branded as “the future of tomorrow”.

One thing remains in common though : both times as I wore uniforms or logos that represented the organisation I was/ am in, I was/am sure to be looked down on with disgust and contempt…… by my fellow Singaporeans.
