“Well that means that you’re, your idea on gender equality is in the right place because if a man hears that song and feels uncomfortable that means he’s probably not the greatest feminist. So what’s great is if you hear that song and I’ll look out – we do these things called secret sessions and we have fans come and listen to the album beforehand, and it’s guys and girls, and I see the guys out there nodding along to that song because what we need in any fight for equality in any group of people, is you need people from the other side to say, ‘Yeah, you’re right, you’re right to want that.’ And so any time men are like ‘I love the song The Man,’ I’m like, ‘I want to give you a hug and a high five. Thanks for being on our side with that!’ Asking for equality in gender perception is not slamming men, it’s saying, ‘Can we please have the same seat at the table finally?’ [,,,] I mean, [a change in perception from men] is a dream scenario if it happens. This is a song I’ve been wanting to write for awhile; the inequality starts at a basic perception level, where it’s like nothing we do is perceived exactly the same. And how are we ever supposed to ask for equal pay, equal standing, ever since the boys club, where nothing we ever do is viewed the same. That’s what wanted to get into in this song.”
