Hey y'all it has been awhile
New comic! (link to comic)
In all of my workspaces I have been gendered as a woman, and all of these things have happened to me. . I find the more âtechnicalâ or corporate the teams are, the more likely that the responsibility of ânon essential labourâ in the office falls on women and femmefolk (my current office is actually very good in this respect, which is really refreshing).
For more information on this phenomenon, read through this excellent metafilter thread on emotional labour.
What is this comic about? Well, generally things like keeping the office tidy day to day, setting up for and cleaning up after meetings, organizing gifts and social events, fundraising, congratulations and condolences 'from the officeâ, and administrative work like minutes-taking⌠pretty much everything that is 'volunteerâ is likely to fall to women.
Sometimes when people argue that this work is non-essential, and that women only do it because they want to do it (and that, by extension, these just arenât things that men care about). The thing is, community building is essential work. People who talk about having great work environments talk about things like hanging out with colleagues after work, having summer sport leagues, lottery groups, that time everyone pitched in vacation time during a family illness, that gift card that appeared on your desk on your birthdayâŚthatâs all stuff someone thinks about and plans and organizes, and itâs non-billable work, so they often do it for free, and that person is more often than not a woman. And thatâs important, vital work, it makes people feel like they can come to work every day and at least not hate it all the time.
Itâs completely devalued labour, and it falls in the laps of women to maintain. Sometimes guys think theyâre participating by having the idea of the work: âJimâs mother passed away - maybe we should get a card to pass around for himâ - but the idea is as far as that participation goes. The organizing and execution of that 'nice ideaâ falls on someone else entirely.
Stuff like this totally undercuts women at work. For example, any time itâs assumed that Iâll take meeting minutes, my ability to participate fully in that meeting is compromised because Iâm taking notes instead of concentrating on my own contributions.
And not doing this work has consequences too. There was a workspace where I was totally watching this happen, so I resolved to act like the men on my team did. I left rooms when they left them (in the condition they left them in), I used the kitchen in the same way, I left my desk in the same condition, but guess who got called out on failing to contribute to the office environment? It wasnât the guys.
If youâre a guytype and you want to be a good ally in your worplace, be the person who volunteers. I mean it. Look around, see whoâs doing the work that isnât in their job descriptions, and pitch in. Take notes, buy cards, organize drinks, and for goodness sake, tidy the kitchen. Â And itâs ok if this social stuff really isnât important to you, but donât you dare be the person who says that itâs not important work, and then feels slighted when no one remembers their birthday.
If youâre already doing this, awesome. Keep up the good work.

In 25 days, 20 hours, and 9 minutes, I will turn 30 years old, and I actually cannot freaking wait. I know that itâs this milestone Iâm supposed to be dreading, constantly staring into my pores or down my shirt like âAM I OLD NOW?â But I am not. I like to think that each decade serves a different purpose; if 10-19 gave me all my body image and self worth issues, 20-29 gave me the time and unwanted responsibility to work through a lot of them and better hone my sense of self. Big milestones often come with big stereotypes and clichĂŠs, so the big 3-0 isnât scaring me like perhaps it does for some people. My 20s were weird and hard and amazing and long and awful and beautiful. I realized a lot of childhood dreams, like living in my favorite city, working for my favorite magazines, falling stupid in love a few times, meeting weird and amazing people. I also experienced what it meant to be flat broke, felt both brilliant and stupid at various jobs, and ...
I turn the big 3-0 this year...and I thought this was pretty great :)

The number of men who hired women, used women, and then took credit for the work and discoveries THEY made is rampant throughout history and disgusting.
Boom.
While this is true and important, Iâd like to point out that their names arenât featured on this post. Cecilia Payne (who discovered the chemical composition of stars and that they consist largely of hydrogen) Annie Jump Cannon (developed the first catalog for the spectral characteristics of stars)

Guys, I donât normally post things like this, but this is the family of one of my close friends and there are cats involved (as well as children and a home and property theyâll never see again). I know times are tight with the holidays, but if you can help in any way, even just by further boosting this message, it would be awesome.

âThis fund provides relief for Michael & Alison Dayâs emergency landslide relocation. We have permanently lost our home and land. We are safe and have a place to stay lined up temporarily thanks to the generosity of all. âTuesday night the rain in Kalama was deafening and in the early morning hours, a there was a rumbling like thunder outside. Wednesday morning most of our hillside cliff had fallen away in a massive landslide which placed our house in immediate danger. There was no open route to the freeway due to other landslides and Kalamaâs extreme flooding. âOnce the roads opened Thursday, we were immediately ordered by the county to evacuate. The landslide continues to leak and sink daily. We have returned several times to the site to assist with expensive emergency measures to prevent further sliding under the house. We can now quickly evacuate our belongings and permanently abandon the property as condemned. Insurance will not cover the damage, which is now over $100,000 and rising. As you can imagine we are quite in shock as we leave our home and dreams behind.
âMany of you know we are the caretakers of a large animal facility at our home, putting us in the position of needing to move immediately with 10 pets. The up-front costs of the emergency services deployed and our swift relocation from the dangerous property are staggering. We thank the Lord no one was injured and we are together safe this holiday season, with the support and love of family and friends. Thank you for any and all assistance in this devastating moment.â
