A while back I drew some more detailed maps of various regions in Ferelden for a tabletop game. I decided to try and draw the whole map like that. This project may have run away with me. Versions you can zoom in on here and here (recommended as I don’t think Tumblr can show the full details).
I’ve drawn information from all the games, as well as some of the novels, graphic novels, World of Thedas books, and the pre-set adventures for the tabletop game.
There are a couple of things that are contradicted between sources:
- West Hills is given as being both a bannorn north of Lake Calenhad and an arling south of Redcliffe. I got around this by having West Hill be a bannorn to the north, and Western Hills be an arling to the south.
- The Hinterlands as seen in Inquisition doesn’t really transfer well onto the larger map. Where possible I’ve included Inquisition placemarkers, but it’s not perfect.
A lot of the details (smaller rivers, minor roads, borders, most of the place names) are my own invention. I’ve tried to make the toponymy somewhat consistent: Highever places are more Scottish, Gwaren is more Welsh/Cornish, the regions near the Frostbacks is more Nordic and references Avvar myths, the region around Lothering has lots of other towns with the -ing suffix.
(I invite people from Ireland and the UK to spot the real place names. Some are intentional, but there are probably a few that just lined up with the real-world toponymy).
This was a lot of fun to make. I might try and do the same for Orlais (no promises though; Orlais is bigger than Ferelden). I’m happy for people to use/expand on this for table-top games, but would like to be informed (if only to feel warm and fuzzy about it :P) (Edited to fit the Battle’s Edge lore better)
