Another thing I noticed while watching Stranger Things season 5 is that the Jancy breakup scene would have made more sense if it was El and Mike. Obviously the set up wouldn’t have worked but the discussion of only truly being with each other because of trauma bonding… works so much better for Mike and El. With Mike only really liking El after finding out that she could help him find Will and El was far too young and unaware of the world to truly understand the implications of a relationship. They were attached to each other cause of the different traumas : for Mike it was losing Will and realising that nobody else cared as much as he did and the need to be normal after being bullied for most of his life for being a queer or at least hearing the bullying directed at Will… for El she has this idea of being normal and doing things that she thought teen girls her age should do, which included a relationship.
In direct contrast, the show had spent so long implying and showing us that the love that Jonathan and Nancy share isn’t something that is entirely caused by the traumatic situation they are going through. This is the most obvious with the fact that Nancy couldn’t say I love you to Steve but did about Jonathan. I would also like to point out that the absolutely pointless beef between Steve and Jonathan made literally no sense. I get why Jonathan would be insecure about the idea of Steve being around Nancy especially since the fact that she mentioned how he has grown since when they dated. But Steve still liking Nancy makes literally no sense whatsoever… like it’s been 4 seasons still their relationship and he’s changed so much but he still hasn’t gotten over Nancy 😂
( also would like to point out that Mike also has trouble saying those words 😑)
Also think about it, the breakup conversation for Mike and El ending being an actual true platonic I love to each other would make a wonderful bookend to their relationship where Mike can truly say I love you to her without the lie of it being romantic and El can move past this chapter of her life and actually be more than just Mike’s gf. It would actually be true freedom for both the characters and allow them to grow in a way that suits the storyline a lot better.
Can I just say that unironically… Season 4 Mike airport outfit is my favourite clothing choice in stranger things. It just never fails to put a smile on my face and it makes him look as pathetic as he is.
Like he truly believed that this stupid outfit is the way at people in California dress and committed to it. It just is the most accurate choice of clothing for pathetic loser (affectionate) Mike Wheeler.
On top of that, Will looked at that man and didn’t immediately recoil in second hand embarrassment is actually a testament to how in love he is with the idiot. Definitely your Tammy 😒
