Stranger Things failed literally all of its women. Apparently El isn’t a person with her own life to live or even her own name; she’s just a magical metaphor who needs to die for the boys’ pain. Apparently Max is just Lucas’ girlfriend and none of her interests, life goals or platonic relationships matter. Apparently Nancy is just The Career Woman who must give up on romance because she can never have it all. Apparently Robin has finally learned to dress in a conventionally feminine way and can’t end up with a love interest either because she’s queer. Apparently Joyce is just a mother and a cop’s wife and nothing more. Apparently Karen is back in the same miserable marriage she started in and not even a near-death experience has changed her status quo. Apparently Kali was good for nothing but death after a lifetime of trauma. Apparently Holly was just a plot device to steal the main characters’ screentime and isn’t actually affected long-term by her traumatic experiences at all. Apparently Erica will be just fine but nobody cares about her. Apparently Vickie is just no longer relevant now that she’s finished propelling a man’s “arc.” Apparently Suzie and Terry Ives are entirely forgotten by the narrative itself.
oh jonathan would never
I can’t believe there’s still people out there who ship Steve and Nancy. Look at her face, man. Just look at her.
Why do I feel like Noah is the only one that remembered Lonnie’s existence in the making of season 5. Like he talked about him in interviews and cons but it seems that other than him the entirety of the writers just forget about Will’s and Jonathan’s abusive father and about Joyce’s abusive ex husband? I wish his long term impact on them was integrated into the plot, not because Lonnie is a character I wanted to see more of, but because I think that after season one it’s like they forgot about the negative effects this man had on his family.
I think them addressing that in season five could’ve been really healing for the byers. Healing for Will’s relationship to his self worth, Jonathan’s relationship to his place in their family and him realising he’s allowed to want things for himself (which is connected to his and Jancy’s arc from season 4 that they never addressed again about Jonathan not wanting to leave his family behind) and Joyce acknowledging she was in an abusive relationship and talking about how it affected her.
Also, I think it’s weird how they never addressed Lonnie’s impact on Will’s internalised homophobia after season one established he was constantly homophobic towards Will when he was a little kid and even called him the f slur multiple times. Like they had this entire journey of Will accepting himself and his sexuality, but they barely even addressed the initial homophobia he faced from his own father that caused him to feel like a mistake.
