lgbt+ members need to give more respect and consideration for aromantic people. remember us and don’t just wait until someone asks you “and aromantics too” or tacks onto your post reminding you to include us. we shouldn’t be added as an afterthought, but a key part just as important as lesbian or gay or bisexual. and don’t just say “oh but that’s what i meant by asexual” no. you mean asexual. aromantic is separate thing. has been for decades.

I actually think this comment is really interesting, especially coming from a queer person.

The first thing I that the asexual, aromantic, or any other aspec experience is fundamentally different from the straight experience. Even if you’re asexual heteroromantic, you grow up thinking that you’re broken, not understanding why everyone is feeling things and you’re not, wondering if you’re going to be alone for the rest of your life, etc. It’s not fun. You don’t grow up in a world that aligns with your attraction. When you look for adults in your life who feel the same way you do, there are none. When you look for someone in a TV show or book that feels the same way you do, there are also none. You don’t grow up never having to question your sexuality. You’re constantly wondering if you’re going to “turn out okay.” You date people you don’t actually like. You have sex people with you don’t actually want to.

The second thing is that you, as a queer person yourself, should know that straight isn’t the “default” sexuality and if someone says they’re asexual/aromantic, they’re not just a “repressed straight person.” No. They could be a repressed bi person, a repressed gay person, a repressed literally any sexuality because you can’t assume that if they weren’t ace they would be straight. And because you can’t know what their sexuality would be if they weren’t ace, it makes no sense to call them straight. They are ace. That’s their sexuality.

And if you don’t like all of this, the label “asexual” has been around for so much longer than when AVEN was founded. There are wonderful articles on the internet about asexual folks in the 1960s that you probably won’t read because you don’t actually care about this post.
