Season 2 of OFMD hit a lot of us really hard, myself included- I know I'm not the only person who needed time to step away and process. Funny how our brains can't always differentiate a fictional death from a real one.. Hard to balance out how much of the season that I really loved with the parts I strongly disagreed with, and it's not just Izzy. But ultimately... I love the show. I love the characters in it, and the story... And I miss the fandom. I miss what it used to be. I shouldn't be so surprised that the tags are pretty dead- Season 2 made Izzy Hands into the figurehead of the ship, then killed him.. It's hard to move on from that. To love the show in spite of it, but I'm trying. Lately I've felt called to rewatch, to come back and reintegrate myself into the fandom- Only to find that that Izzy's tag is... pretty abysmal, and there doesn't seem to be much of a fandom to rejoin.. Not the fandom I remember, anyway. Where did everyone go..? Same place I went, I guess. But if I want the fandom I remember back, I can't just lurk in the tags then bitch about them being empty- I also have to fill them. To actively participate in the fandom I want to see. So here I am, and you're gonna be seeing a lot more of me in the tags from here on, meta posts mostly. And to those of you out there who might be reading and feel the same.. I hope to see y'all in the tags too. Otherwise we run the very real risk of OFMGR being the only one posting regularly in the Izzy Hands tag and we can't have that xD

Most Izzy fans have moved to Bluesky. I’ve only been in this fandom for about a month but apparently there used to be a lot of infighting and that’s why it’s kind of quiet over here.

Of that I am aware! I have been in the fandom since the start and I know a lot of fans left to Bluesky- But I don't believe in ceding ground to people who don't understand how to play nicely when engaging with fandom, and as much as I wanted to get onboard with Bluesky... Tumblr is my home. I'll be here talking about Izzy Hands until this place is run into the dirt lol.

Looking at Anne and Mary’s current relationship, it looks a LOT like Izzy and Ed’s. And Anne mentioned that Ed had a “type”—the artsy outsider. We just got confirmation that Izzy can read. We see from the previews that Izzy can sing and do drag. Was Izzy the previous artsy outsider?

Is Izzy literally (rather than just metaphorically, like we already know) Ed’s ex?

Why do I ship Blackhands so much? I know they’re toxic. I know they make each other worse. I know their relationship is doomed by the narrative.

Is it the way that Ed can’t let Izzy go? How he spins a murderous plot just to stop Izzy from quitting? How he gets antsy to “move onto the next adventure” the very episode after Izzy is banished? How after Izzy aggravates Ed’s Stede-induced abandonment issues, Ed retaliates by physically making it harder for Izzy to walk away?

Or is the way Izzy is so protective of Ed? How he challenges his romantic rival to a duel the same way a protagonist would, only without the good fortune of actually being a protagonist? How he has a multi-layered plan for keeping Ed safe when the British come, only to have the most heartbroken expression on his face when Ed takes the Act of Grace anyway? How he puts himself between Ed and the crew (who nearly murdered him) in order to keep anyone from seeing Ed when he’s (in Izzy’s mind) weak and vulnerable?

Is it their matching tattoos? The way Izzy has Ed’s signature tattooed in the exact spot Spanish Jackie’s husband Geraldo has an SJ carved on his cheek? How Ed has that IS____ tattoo that presumably stands for “Israel”? How their swallow tattoos are the inverse of one another (Izzy’s has a solid body and outlined head, Ed’s has a solid head and outlined body)?

Or is it all the random little things in life? The way Izzy is so proud of being the only one (as of the season start) who’s allowed to call Blackbeard by his real name? How Ed runs to Izzy whenever he finds a knick-knack that brings him joy? How Izzy sits on the edge of the dinghy to let Ed stretch out his bad leg?

Maybe it’s just the hope that all of us have: that broken things can still be mended.
