Yuna can understand Japanese but doesn't speak it well. (Shane finally learns for his youngest son who gets obsessed with the European Middle Ages and Japanese Samurai. Ironically it's the son who turned out to look exactly like Ilya's mini me!)
I'm absolutely firm on Yuna being Yuri Katski's Auntie. I read the Ao3 fanfic "Figure Skating for Hockey Players" and now Shane and Yuri are cousins, no questions.
Hollander Men are gentle. Hollander Grandad, Hollander Uncles, and David. They're strong, capable, kind and quiet. Autistic? Oh probably...definitely. Uncle Robert has a train set in his attic.
The first time Ilya sees David lean over the sofa at bedtime to kiss Shane on the head, Ilya's heart grows three sizes, then it happens to him!
He calls Ilya "Son". He calls Haydn "Son" too, but Ilya doesn't mind. It's said with so much love.
David calls Shane Sweetheart.
Yuna is also extremely kind and capable. She struggled a lot after Shane came out because she had to examine where her positivity could be a bit...overpowering. Shane never used the word "Toxic" but Yuna is down with the kids. She's done some soul searching and wondered how many times she'd told her son "Don't cry"...
And he's taken it as an order not the immense love that she felt đ.
The relationship between mother and son was never broken, and the flaw that caused any pain is just a crack in the metaphorical bowl. Mended with gold.
Ilya is Off. The. Charts. Smart. I cannot stress this enough. His brain squirrels away facts, figures, techniques, bits of music, history, physics...
Even Ilya didn't really understand how intelligent he was until he got bored and did a crossword in one of David's newspapers and a trophy showed up a few weeks later with his name on it. (David submitted it obviously!)
Shane isn't stupid. He really isn't...but his grades were atrocious. He's hockey clever. That's plenty.
Yuna was briefly worried that a concussion at the age of 14 had knocked all his mathematics out of his head.
And a quick Rozanov headcannon.
Ilya's sister in law reaches out to him after her inevitable divorce. Her daughter is showing promise as a ballet dancer and she wants to at least show her uncle. Ilya's niece ends up in Japan being trained by Minako but puts on a pair of figure skates one day and the rest is history!
Downtime activities include
Football (They end up with a Brit on the team!)
Well, they have curling brooms but no stones. They use Shane instead, in lotus position.
Learning to Waltz. This began as helping Bood before a posh wedding and became a competitive and combative sport. The only person who'd ever waltzed before was Ilya "Russian Rennaisance" Rozanov.
The only problem was, he could only lead. Cue multiple borderline HR violation jokes about his Marital Sex life directed at Shane.
There's A Smell in the locker room. A few of them can smell it at all times, some of them can smell it in certain spots. It moves. Shane thinks he heard it squeak. You can drop a crumb on the floor before a game and it'll be gone when you get back.
