A was joking. It was just for a YouTube video. Let’s get a ouji board. A had planned to move and pretend to be scared and then reveal the joke. Some solid content, sure to get viewers. That was until the piece actually moved. By itself. That was until the board spells out the name of A’s teenaged sweetheart, C, who died in a fire. After a series of communications with C, A discovers the fire was no accident and is determined to uncover the truth. B, however, a new cop whose best friend was C, is also investigating. When their paths cross they join forces to uncover the truth. And maybe they uncover a few more secrets about themselves and each other along the way.

A has always had vivid dreams about a man/woman/adult individual ever since A was a child. They often dream of this person, someone they don’t remember meeting before. Whenever they brought it up they were told it must’ve been some A saw in passing by. It made sense. Then, one day, A sees B, the person from A’s dreams. A knows it’s crazy. B would’ve aged if A had seen them as a child, whichcan only mean A was dreaming of the future or B is immortal and both are absolutely crazy. But A can’t deny, this is the person from their dreams.

A has the power to see ghosts/spirits. Whether they were born with this power, it developed over time or is the result of experimentation is up to you. While many of the ghosts are hard to interact with, scary or mute A does occasionally talk to some who he becomes friend with of sorts. When A moved houses there’s a ghost living there, B. B only died recently and as a result they are still capable of full thought and speech. A and B become friends. But then A begins to develop feelings for B (who unbeknownst to A has liked them for the very start). This is when A starts searching for ways to bring B back to life or give them a body somehow and things take a dark turn.

A gets addicted to drugs or alcahol and after a particularly bad stint is sent to rehab. They get out to find their family/friends have hired a sober companion, B. A and B have to live together for the next three months with B trying to keep A sober and healthy (despite A’s apparent attempts to sabotage their own health and well-being). This time period involves many deep, angsty conversations as they are forced to trust each other and share secrets as well as some fluff and hurt/comfort. As the time passes they both develop feelings for one another. But what happens when B’s time comes to an end? Does B leave or are the two willing to admit their feelings?

A spell/potion/experiment/machine etc. goes very wrong and A’s age is reversed. B wants/has to take care of A. What age does A revert to and what problems come with it? (Eg. Baby, toddler, child or teen) (feeding, school, play, nightmares, cuddles, stories, angst, mood swings) Does A remember everything, nothing, or only the same memories they had at this age? Last but not least, when A is finally turned back to normal, how do A and B act around each other?
A and B are forced to/accidentally travel back in time to A’s greatest childhood trauma. B has to find A as a child and help them get through their trauma as well as trying to find a way back to the present.
imo the best way to interpret those “real people don’t do x” writing advice posts is “most people don’t do x, so if a character does x, it should be a distinguishing trait.” human behavior is infinitely varied; for any x, there are real people who do x. we can’t make absolute statements. we can, however, make probabilistic ones.
for example, most people don’t address each other by name in the middle of a casual conversation. if all your characters do that, your dialogue will sound stilted and unnatural. but if just one character does that, then it tells us something about that character.
