Etch consists of a computer control system which, using my body as a sensor to detect human motion around me, controls a series of three circuit board panels with portraits etched into them, bridging them to form an electrically longer or shorter antenna for a receiving antenna connected to a radio set. The radio set’s received static modulates in accordance with the length of its antenna. More panels are bridged as more motion is observed, mirroring the social activity within the room while I myself am necessarily removed from it. Furthermore, the motion of persons within the room affects the reception of the antennas. The antennas and computer system are electrically isolated from each other.
