something that's always stuck with me is Adorno's critique of liberal research on fascism - that liberal scientists believe you can approach fascism in good faith by simply asking Nazis what they think about the world and then writing it down. He argued that fascism is itself a bad faith ideology, and that Nazis will not usually answer the question "do you want to exterminate all minorities?" truthfully, especially not when asked by academics (who are all Marxists/Jews/etc plotting to destroy civilization). So in order to accurately capture fascist sentiment, you have to conceal your intentions and basically lie to them. And there are real moral imperatives for social scientists to do this, in the same way that journalists go undercover in white supremacist groups to report on their activities and beliefs. There's even that famous East German documentary where the directors lied to a Nazi military leader about being West German filmmakers, got him drunk, and then just filmed him saying Nazi shit lol. So like the conventions of science itself, the idea that good research is necessarily always transparent, is a political assumption that shapes how you conduct research and acquire knowledge

test weaving of penelope's tapestry on the chiusi skyphos:
reference:
there are some adjustments I need to make for tension, but I'd like to make the next version into a header band for a warp-weighted loom so I can try weaving the whole pot, including telemachus and penelope.
progress?
the proportions on the header band have improved, but I think I maybe should have doubled the weft threads for the warp.
also if anyone wants to knit the heddles for me, please be my guest. the last time I tied on heddles, I put the bar in the wrong place and had to redo the whole thing.
in true penelope fashion, I may need to unweave and start over, but at least now I've got the loom weights and heddles in place.
I started weaving the spear, penelope, and the right border via double-weave with the intent to leave the remaining warp threads unwoven (as they would be on penelope's loom on the pot), but predictably this is giving me tension problems. I either need to increase the loom weights or just weave the black layer and leave the orange warp threads unwoven, and then switch colors once I get to the heddle bars in the drawing, with the black warp threads floating on top. (I guess weft-faced tapestry would be a third option, if I add a ton more tension.)
either way, this is going to take me the full three years of penelope's stratagem, or perhaps the entire twenty years of odysseus's absence, primarily because clearing the sheds takes a monumental effort each time with this double-weave setup (which I'm not even sure is how it's supposed to be done, I kind of set it up based on vibes and what I thought made sense from floor loom setups).
I have 999 problems and warp tension is 997 of them (the other two are my selvedges).

Sometimes you wake up feeling absolutely terrible with an awful migraine and simply the only POSSIBLE thing you can do to console yourself is spend 3.5 hours making yourself a fish bag to hold your water bottle in order to cheer yourself up. I saw a post on here awhile back of somebody's fish bag and was like "Oh I want!" Well now I have!
I used leftovers from various pants I've made. As you can see, the purple I used for the head is the same as the purple of the pants I'm wearing in the photo. This green linen I got from Metro Textiles turned out to be absolutely awful quality so I've been looking for something to do with it and this is fine for now. It's a fun silly little thing that I don't plan on using regularly, unlike the pants I made out of it that disintegrated at the seams within 6 months of sewing them. Still pissed about that.
Look at this buttonhole I stitched where the drawstring exits the fish!! Isn't it beautiful?! I wanted to stitch the seam allowance down a little bit here and ended up doing buttonhole stitch around the edges of the opening just to make it nice.
Okay now I am going to go back to hiding from the light, though. Because while my mood is way better thanks to fish bag I do still feel like, really unwell and awful on a physical level.
PS before folks ask, here is the tutorial the OP of the other post mentioned, though like OP of that post I sort of just got the general gist of the idea and did my own thing. Has a written tutorial and a video tutorial, though part of the written tutorial is "watch the video to learn how to draw the fish pattern" which is annoying for those of us who hate video tutorials or find them inaccessible (hi me I find video tutorials inaccessible because of my disabilities give me the photo tutorial for fucks sake ahem anyway)
big news for people who are me
Archaeologists uncovered a 1,000-year-old Viking textile production center near Aarhus, revealing large-scale cloth making and trade.
The site sits near Søften in eastern Jutland, about 10 kilometers north of modern Aarhus. Excavations by the Moesgaard Museum show a planned production area instead of a normal farming village. The settlement covered at least 100,000 square meters. Most of the work focused on making textiles, though other forms of handwork also took place there.
Researchers found an area where flax was prepared before workers turned the plant into linen. They also uncovered 82 pit houses, small sunken buildings linked with Viking workshops. Many held spindle whorls and loom weights, showing cloth production took place on a large scale.

Finally bought some dye and have been having so much fun with optical color mixing. I decided to start with cmyk primaries to get some vibrant color options.
So far I've only mixed up the main batch of colors, but I'll split them up and create a palatte of tints and shades once I have access to a scale again.
I don't have any fancy tools and have been blending the fiber by hand, so it's probably best I have a forced break for the sake of my fingers. Once I'm done I should have a very useful set of 57 2g swatches to play with! (Plus 5 more for a set of grayscale swatches)
If I'm still up for it, I might repeat the whole thing with my classic red, yellow, blue primary dye set. For a truly massive set of heather swatches.

I feel like the more you know about something the higher the bar becomes for "a thought worth sharing"
And not becaus you assume your thoughts must be common knowledge. When you become aware of the scale of your ignorance, you feel eternally on the cusp of real understanding.
figured out the paper piecing software enough to start making a bunch of bread tag blocks. Unsure if the entire quilt is going to be bread tags or if I'm going to make some bread blocks. Could also be a junk drawer quilt. Much to think about
Four more bread tags! Still have no clue the direction I'm going with this and its taken the back burner for the moment while I work on a commissioned quilt. I'll be back to it soon as I'm almost done with the commission.
