Fun Home by Alison Bechdel
I found this comic to be moving and something to think about. I related to her description of how she viewed her father as being evil in the beginning because he was so cold and used the family more as tools and an extension of himself. The reference to her family being the same as the Addams family was comical since yes they are dark and Gothic but they love each other and stick together that it can be sickening.
This was a coming of age story that revolved around the father and daughter. It showed how being homosexual was something you had to be discreet with and the reason why the dad was able to get away with it more besides being sly is that he used his authoritative power and influence over his male students and men who did labor for him.
I found it sweet that Alison and her dad really start seeing eye to eye after she becomes his student and they talk about literature. But this limits things in college for her when she stops taking Lit courses and further proves that he only has interest in her when she partake in his interest. Like how he asked her for fashion sense since she liked the male ruggish look.
Although how you perform your gender doesn't make out your sexuality, the father partook in a lot of 'feminine' activities like decoration and gardening plus he was very fashion conscious.
