whenever I feel lonely I think of the sum total of all individual human beings who contributed to cultivating food crops and I pick up a vegetable and ponder how thousands of years of intention from my species has brought it to my hand

#vegetables #farming #agriculture #one of my fave pastimes is looking up the original wild forms of cultivated/hybridized plants #it's absolutely wild to me that:#1) people thought of cultivating/farming plants to begin with #2) people observed these plants closely and came up with the idea of crossing/hybridizing them #3) this action completely changed everything about our own species #i mean pretty much everything about our modern lives has come about because people settled down and started farming #not all of that has been good of course #one of the big bads being men claiming land and wanting to pass it down to only their kids and what that meant for women #but it's amazing nonetheless

Another design is using 2 20x25x1 filters, taping them to the sides of the box fan and then to each other so they sort of make a triangle, then cutting cardboard to make a top and bottom to the triangle.

I’ve personally used both the flat single-filter version AND the triangular two-filter version, and based on subjective personal experience I would argue that the benefits from the second filter, both in terms of airflow and filtration, are absolutely worth it. If you need a makeshift air filter and you have two filters to work with, build the triangle (if not the box, i have no idea how good that one works but based on the info here i presume it’s a fair bit better.)

#this is a frequent topic of discussion in our household as well with the cellar spiders in the garage #there's occasionally a big girl out there hanging out #then we see a smaller male in the web with her #and then an egg sac appears #i don't think the females eat the males but we have seen them eat other spiders #including immature giant house spiders #i can't tolerate spiders inside the house #we have a catch-and-release policy #but they are more than welcome to live in the garage and do their thing

I've been working in Corporate America for most of my adult life. At the company I work for, like many companies, we use Workday to track our time, request PTO, look at pay stubs, etc. For most of that time, requesting PTO was under "Time Off". Then they renamed it "Absence".

None of my other coworkers saw the problem with this. It absolutely enraged me, and none of them saw where I was coming from and thought I was being dramatic. "Absence" has always had a negative connotation to me; it's implying you're missing from a place you're supposed to be. You're Absent. Shirking your duties. Not bringing your A Game.

Words matter.
