Steve eventually get's worn down one day when he's dropping the two of them off and says, "Fine, Max, get your stuff."

Lucas thinks he's going to get the same response but when they get to the Sinclairs', Steve just says, "Ok see you tomorrow, bud."

Lucas is like, "What the hell? how is that fair?"

Steve sighs and replies, "It's fair because I don't want to get in your parents' bad books for kidnapping you. Sometimes they give me homemade food. I'm not jeopardising that."

"You're kidnapping Max."

"Max doesn't already have a nice home with loving parents." He turns to look at her appologetically. "No offence."

"None taken. I'm having the biggest room at your place."

"My parents' 'nice house' doesn't have its own pool."

"Trust me sinclair you do not wanna swim in that pool. It's... contaminated..."

Lucas narrows his eyes, "Contaminated how?"

"...Nancy's friend Barb was dragged to her death by a demogorgon in there."

Lucas stares at him in horror for a moment, then unbuckles his seatbelt and opens the door, "See you guys tomorrow. Have fun with the murder pool Max."

Max shrugs, "I don't care I'm not planning on swimming in it."

As they drive off, Steve turns to Max and says, "Not a word to Dustin about why I keep the pool covered and the back door locked."

Max mimes zipping her lips. Steve nods. They don't bring it up again.

A few months down the line, Robin, Dustin and Steve spend an entire day following false leads looking for Eddie Munson, who Dustin swears is innocent, only to walk into Steve's place and find him curled up on the couch looking shell shocked with Max tossing a blanket over his shoulders and Dustin's mom handing him a hot chocolate in Steve's favourite mug.
